Whereas many books draw from the Scriptures to produce a thoughtful consideration of life and doctrine, this book leads the reader back into the Scriptures to savor the glorious promise-shaped patterns found within. Although I find many reasons to recommend this book, the recommendation I find myself giving to my friends is that this book heightens your delight of God's Word. Hamilton does not just walk the reader through these types, he walks the reader through the text, highlighting the textual correspondence and escalation so that the typological connections come exploding off the pages of Scripture. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

To be honest, I struggled to get through this book. Not that it's not good. It is well researched, and the author has forgotten more about the Torah than I'll ever know. It is so dense that there is way too much to take in, even with the nearly 400 pages of text here. I'm not entirely convinced of some of the linkages that Hamilton makes, and there are at times, what seem to me to be logical leaps, but I cannot fault his passion for the topic, his in-depth knowledge of the Biblical text, and his clear focus. It's been a while since I delved into such an academic text, but I have no doubt that this will be useful in seminary and Bible college classrooms. I would have fared better if I knew Hebrew, and recommend reading this with a Bible handy.

NOTE: I was provided an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you want to know your Bible better and see it with fresh eyes then open this book and see how God has crafted through the biblical authors his promise-shaping patterns. These patterns are revealed through types whether it be Moses typifying Jesus, the temple pointing backward to Eden and forward to the New heaven and new earth, or the seed of the serpent seen in Pharaoh pointing forward to those who will also oppose God's people. All these examples and more Dr. Hamilton brings out in this book. One of the most beneficial things this book will do for you is make you a better reader of the Bible which will result in a deeper love for God.

Dr. Hamilton over and over again points out chiasms in the bible and even delightfully shapes his whole book as a chiasm. He defines chiasm as

    1.1 An extension of parallelism

    --1.2 Providing structure and boundaries

--- 1.3 An Aid to memory

    --1.4 Creating Synergy

1.5 A Vehicle for artistic Beauty

Chiasms open your eyes to how God has intended us to see and read his word. Get yourself a copy of this book and grow in your fear and admonition of the Lord.
