Product Description

At first glance it may seem easy to put Bible heroes on a pedestal, and to think, They were specially chosen by God and had unique gifts and abilities. How could I possibly be like them? However, the reality is that the Bible figures we admire were human, with strengths and weaknesses just like us.
In Twelve Unlikely Heroes, best-selling author and teacher from Grace to You ministries, John MacArthur takes a closer look at several of these saints to show how God's glory shines all the clearer through their imperfect stories. You'll get to know the lives and times of Joseph, Jonathan, Esther, James and many others. In doing so, it will become clear how their stories apply to our lives today, and reveal the true Hero behind every witness.

Publisher's Description

What kind of people does God use to accomplish His work?

Far from the children’s tales depicted in picture books and nursery rhymes, the men and women highlighted in the Bible were unnervingly real.  They faltered. They struggled. And at times, they fell short. Yet God worked through them in surprising and incredible ways to accomplish His purposes. Scripture does not hide their weaknesses, caricature their strengths, or spin their stories as a display of human nobility. Instead, it describes these heroes of the faith with unflinching honesty and delivers an unexpected ending: “God is not ashamed to be called their God” (Hebrews 11:16).

In Twelve Unlikely Heroes, pastor and best-selling author John MacArthur uses his deep knowledge of the Bible and history to take us back to see these three-dimensional men and women in their own times and cultures. In doing so, it becomes clear how their dramatic stories apply to us today. People who might at first seem foreign quickly become familiar and unforgettable—particularly as they reveal the true Hero behind every witness, the power counterbalancing every weakness, “the Author and Finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1).

After reading Twelve Ordinary men several years ago, I had no preconceived thoughts of this book.. What I found was a very compelling and insightful book with huge "background" insight of each of the 12 Hero's. For me personally, after reading and re reading the Bible and being familiar with the names with sort of a thumbnail idea of who they were, the author, in my opinion, provides the answers in a way that says, " yes, but did you know this? are you aware of that? did you grasp the importance of this event? I was able to gain tremendous insight, and gaining a better understanding of the " life and times" of these 12. This book is also very easy to read and follow from beginning to end.

Dr.John MacArthur is an excellent teacher and an excellent writer. He takes twelve characters from the Scriptures and fleshes out their stories to give us insights into how God can use the most unlikely of people to work His will. I have many John MacArthur books but this is one of my favorites. If you're looking for deeper insight into the lives, motivations and actions of some of the most unlikely Biblical heroes, this book is absolutely for you. Think He can't use you as you are? Think again! Five stars!!!!

MacArthur focuses on 12 characters of the Bible who had an impact on our Christian heritage and the powerful lessons in the Bible. Some of these characters are represented in only a few short lines of scripture, others are prominently featured or are the subject of an entire book of the Bible. In all cases, MacArthur provides an in-depth look at each character, their relationship to God and the impact that they made on their people, culture and the actual lessons contained in the Bible. Although you may be familiar with the character or their story, MacArthur provides amazing detail often by sourcing additional data to provide new dimensions into their stories. In many cases, I learned new details from MacArthurs additional research or being able to see something new in scripture that I might have glossed over in my previous 10 readings.

Especially insightful is MacArthurs comparison and contrast of different characters: Gideon vs. Samson (weak made strong vs. strong made weak), Mark and Onesimus (both redeemed and powerfully used in ministry) and Saul vs. Jonathan (contrasts in character and leadership).

This book also has a companion Study Guide to be used for group study. The questions provide interesting insights that make each character and their lessons applicable to the individual and many would spark interesting discussion for a group setting.
