Outreach to those who struggle with same-sex attraction is severely lacking in most churches. As a result, most Christians learn more about homosexuality from movies, the internet, television, and so-called diversity training than they learn in their own congregations. Many people who struggle with same-sex attraction are torn by the debate while yearning to hear the redemptive truth of the Bible and be touched by the unyielding love of Christ. Author Bill Campbell believes that Christians can have a significant positive influence on how the larger culture frames the issue of same-sex attraction. He combines twenty years of study with current surveys and research by national leaders of ministries to homosexuals. Campbell packs his book with insights, tools, and practical guidelines for creating ministry in any size or type of congregation. Implementing these ideas not only helps bring Christs presence to those with unwanted same-sex attractions, but also enables Christian congregations to become more relevant to a changing world. This book covers such topics as the nature/nurture debate, law vs. grace, and scriptures call to holiness. Readers are equipped with understanding and language to converse about each topic in a truthful, loving, and insightful manner. Likewise, Campbell suggests ways churches can build ministry in five critical areas: leadership training, preaching, support groups, mentoring/counseling, and outreach. Turning Controversy into Church Ministry provides the right blend of information, practical steps for action, and guidelines for Christian renewal so that controversy about homosexuality can become the launch pad for vital ministry.

He brings integrity and love and compassion in seeking a solution while honoring God.
Jeff Winter5 Stars Out Of 5September 20, 2010Jeff WinterDr. Campbell's timely, thoughtful and well-written book is a must read for every believer and leader of a Christian organization. It is the best written book on the market that helps individuals, organizations and churches think through how they might establish a ministry to those who have same-sex attraction. It is both theologically and biblically sound as well as extremely practical. No other book on the market speaks to how to do ministry with those who struggle with same-sex attraction. I wish this book was written twenty years ago. Praise God for Dr. Campbell!!
Dr. Stephen W. Hiemstra5 Stars Out Of 5September 19, 2010Dr. Stephen W. HiemstraHow does a pastor respond to someone seeking care for unwanted same sex attractions? Campbell turns to the story of the woman caught in adultery. Jesus asked, Woman, Has no one condemned you? No one, Sir. Then neither do I, Go now and leave your life of sin. (John 8:10-11). Campbell notes two principles in Jesus response: truth and grace. The truth is found in the admonition: Go now and leave your life of sin. The grace is found in the statement: neither do I condemn you. The book has three parts: Analysis: Your Church, Christs Body.Approach: Overcoming Controversy.Action: Building Ministry.Campbell starts with the current status of your church and then provide informationsboth scriptural and practicalabout the major controversies in church responses to homosexuality. He finally talks about the ministry challenges in ministry to homosexuals and provides links to ministry resources.Campbell speaks from more than 20 years of experience as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He recounts stories of families and individuals that he interviewed who have struggled with unwanted same-sex attractions and overcome them. His personal interface with the gay community arose from both family experiences and from his own ministry in church located close to an AIDs clinic. He is passionate about the Gospel and has a shepherds heart for those in need.Bills book is overdue. From my own walk with the Lord, I was ministered to as a young person by staff and clergy who were later dismissed for gay relationships. In my role as clerk of session in my home church, I found myself whipsawed by church controversies over ordination standards with little guidance other than scripture and personal experiences. As I now approach ministry myself, I feel a deep need to be informed scripturally and practically in helping all people who come in need. Turning Controversy into Church Ministry is a book that fills this need.
