Product Description

Although they do not constitute a dominant genre, vision-reports--such as those surrounding the nativity, the transfiguration and resurrection, Stephen's martyrdom, and Jesus's appearance to Saul--appear at crucial moments in numerous New Testament texts. Surprisingly, however, they have occasioned few detailed studies.

Edith Humphrey's careful work neatly fills that gap in the scholarly literature. By means of a literary and rhetorical approach, Humphrey offers new insights into the use of vision-reports, moving beyond previous studies that have tended to focus only on the recorded event (what actually happened?) to the deeper polemical, literary, and theological dimensions (how and to what end do the authors embed the vision-report in their writings?).

Humphrey details four uses of vision-reports: to complete the narrative, to direct the argument, to shape the narrative, and to fire the imagination. Taking the cue from these narratives, which are at once "open" and "directive," she commends a hermeneutics of receptivity to the reader. This work is directed largely at scholars and students who will find much here to stimulate and inform their studies of the vision-reports and their narratives. Clergy will also find this an enlightening and accessible work that will give them much material to consider when preaching on these or related New Testament passages. Edith M. Humphrey (Ph.D., McGill University) is the William F. Orr Professor of New Testament Studies at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. She is the author of several books, including Ecstasy and Intimacy: When the Holy Spirit Meets the Human Spirit.

The Studies in Theological Interpretation series is dedicated to the pursuit of constructive theological interpretation of the church's inheritance of prophets and apostles in a manner that is open to reconnection with the long history of theological reading in the church. These brief, focused, and closely argued studies evaluate the hermeneutical, historical, and theological dimensions of scriptural reading and interpretation for our times.

Publisher's Description

Vision reports in the New Testament--Stephen's vision at his stoning, Paul's experience in the third heaven, John's apocalyptic visions on the isle of Patmos--pull readers and listeners into a dramatic and dynamic thought world. Author Edith M. Humphrey takes a literary-rhetorical approach to examine how word and image work together in understanding vision reports, demonstrating how biblical visions convey and reinforce messages that deeply affect readers. Visions, Humphrey believes, have not only been seen and heard but also can be transmitted as more than teaching. And I Turned to See the Voice uncovers a fascinating combination of beauty, potency, and mystery behind New Testament vision accounts.
