Short, very informal introductions are written directly to the student and open up each topic with a distinctly Christian perspective. History had never really been interesting to me, until I started using these guides to teach my children. Don't just use the spine books that she lists. Have fun and track down some of the books on the list from your library and just enjoy. Getting to use the different books made it all come alive, and you can see what God was doing and how man was responding to God. The kids are learning about character as well. You get to read from different authors and different illustrators, and that keeps it fresh. History is spent on the couch, in bed, at the park, or outside in the back yard on a swing. I just read to my sweethearts and we discuss it. The ones old enough do the "Think write exercises" in writing do so, and the littlest ones do them verbally. You would be surprised what the little learn. Family discussions are so much fun, and I don't know how many times the kids refer to something we have read or acted it out. Recently, a homeschool mom told me that I should scale back the time I spend on teaching Science and History. My daughters overheard her and started crying. On another note, I am one of those moms who thought they could only handle a curriculum that is all laid out. If I can do this, anybody can. I got weary of the kids begging me to read some of the stories "just one more time". So, I told them that they knew how to read, and that they could read the stories themselves. It sure has helped their reading. I quit assigning things because they read so much on their own. We also started our own library. Some of the books become favorites that the girls read over and over.
