Product Description

We've been taught that temptation cripples the soul. But can God use it to shape our spiritual growth? Taking a practical, relevant, theologically sound approach to the snares of our contemporary culture, Chaddick shows how challenges to conviction and character can lead to a pursuit of the good instead of merely an avoidance of evil. 176 pages, softcover from Cook.

Publisher's Description

Temptation isn’t merely about winning or losing a battle.
It’s about discovering who you truly are.
And what matters most.

On a daily basis, we are all tempted to enjoy the gifts of this world while making the Giver optional or irrelevant in our quest for life. But what if, in God’s purposes, temptation is not merely an obstacle to overcome but an opportunity to flourish in faith?

Living in the truth exposes lies and turns moments of temptation into character-shaping opportunities, powerfully displaying our true identity as followers of Jesus.

Editorial Reviews

"Life comes down to moments. And not all moments are created equal. Some matter a lot more than others. In those crucial, axis-point moments, the kind that set the trajectory for our future, how will we respond? Will we succeed or fail miserably? Will we keep our footing or fall on our faces? How do we navigate the moments of life with wisdom beyond our years and face the temptations of our hearts with courage and resolve? In The Truth about Lies, Tim leads us into a new place as he sets a new framework for how to live and how to live well. If you’re ready to take the journey, I can’t think of a better guide."

"Tim Chaddick has the ability to strip away the impenetrable exoskeleton of a thing and crack it wide open, exposing its beating and sometimes damaged heart. He writes with graceful accessibility but also careful urgency—a combination that is all at once refreshing and convincing."

"Tim is a leader we should pay attention to. This book is about the testing of a leader—something we all struggle with. Tim provides practical perspective and helpful application for the moments when our mettle is tested and our character revealed. You’ll gain crucial insight into the process of maturing as a follower of Jesus, the blocking and tackling of temptation and pushing through, the constant daily renewing of our minds and hearts. It’s messy, but meaningful. It’s raw, but refined. If you are a leader, read this book!"

"Tim is one of the new generation’s preacher/teacher/writers who I’m thankful for. He’s passionate, clear thinking, articulate, deeply rooted in Scripture, and in tune with culture. The depth, transparency, and simplicity of his writing make this book both engaging and helpful. I’m certain you will be blessed and benefit greatly from it."

"Tim Chaddick is such a gift to our generation. He combines theological expertise, pastoral concern, and cultural sensitivity in a way that few people are able to do. His gifts culminate in this book to take on a topic we need to look at with fresh eyes—the topic of temptation. The claim of the book: If we know how to approach it,
temptation can form in us Christlike character. Read this book with a highlighter!"

"Tim Chaddick has given us a gift with The Truth about Lies. In the middle of our temptation, God is doing a great work in us. This book is biblical, wise, and necessary."

"Tim has done a brilliant job helping us think wisely about temptation and understanding it, and therefore we can respond to it with God’s help before it wrecks us. If you have ever been tempted or ever think you will be, this book will help you live more closely to the ways of Jesus."

"Tim Chaddick is a man of profound Scripture-formed insight and wisdom. His life and words draw me deeper into the presence and joy of Christ every time we are together and when I read his works. In The Truth about Lies, Tim leads us on a discovery of truth that helps deliver us from lesser things and brings us into a fuller, faithful experience with Jesus. I am so thankful for this book and this man; you will be well pastored as you read The Truth about Lies."

"Tim Chaddick is able to communicate to a post-Christian audience as well as anyone I know. In this book, he skillfully shows how the narrative of our culture and the questions it raises can only be satisfactorily answered by the narrative of the truth of the gospel."

"In The Truth about Lies, Tim Chaddick shows that temptation is not an obstacle to following Jesus; it is an opportunity to become like Jesus. In a book that will be relevant until sin is silenced and the Devil vanquished, Chaddick gives more than a strategy for battling temptation; he points to the Savior who gives us the power to
overcome it. I’m incredibly thankful for Tim Chaddick and his courage to remind us all that if we have heard the truth from heaven, we can face the lies of hell."

Tim Chaddicks approach is very practical and very real. Humans have the tendency to think about temptation in the extremes of socially unacceptable sins, such as murder, but tend to balk at harboring anger at another in their hearts. Chaddick gets to the root of this thinking by exposing the lies that we tell ourselves about temptation. Temptation is an area in the Christian life in which everyone wants to be free from it until we actually start to face the implications of such a life. Because of my tendency to fall into sin, I once had a friend tell me after putting a block on my computer to my stern objection, What price are you willing to pay for righteousness? That is the implication of this book. A righteous life cannot be pursued without some sort of a trade-off. Chaddick also demonstrates that battling temptation is not so much a matter of will as it is a matter of surrendering to Gods grace day after day. Temptation is not a sin; giving into it is. But for those who battle against that urge to give in, they will draw strength from the Holy Spirit to continue to defeat the flesh one day at a time. If you truly desire to battle against the flesh, read this book and join the battle with the millions who have gone before and share in the victory. I received this book as a part of a reviewing program from christianaudio in exchange for an honest review.

"The Truth about Lies" is a Christian living book. It's short but packed full of life-changing truth. Ever wonder why God allows temptation? This book showed how God uses temptation to expose what we desire the most and to build our trust relationship with Him. The author examined the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, His trial before the Sanhedrin, and more to show the lies with which Satan tempts us. He also pointed out the truth that was applied to each temptation or that can be learned from it. He also explained how to succeed when faced with temptation, and how we need to look at the root issues behind why we give in to certain temptations.

Basically, this book is about getting the correct, biblical view of temptation. This is a great, foundational book for any Christian, but I'd especially recommend it to those who are feeling discouraged regarding temptation.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
