Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in Iowa, and graduated from the University of Iowa. I've lived for many years in Kernersville, NC, but enjoy spending as much time as possible at Smith Mountain Lake, VA, where the book was written.
What was your motivation behind this project? This book began as a bedtime story for my boys, ages 8 and 4 1/2, who wanted to camp out in the living room on an inflatable raft island, complete with a treasure chest, before we took it down to the water. After the boys had fallen asleep, I ran to the table and wrote it all down. The 4 1/2 year-old grew up to be a fine artist, and I asked him to illustrate the book before he left for college. The story was finally published 15 years after being told.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that families will enjoy the adventure of the story, and especially the Christian theme tucked into it. Preschoolers can have it read to them, and elementary ages can begin reading it on their own. (The main character is about 10 years old.) I hope that they will enjoy the detailed illustrations, and will be able to place themselves within the story. I would hope that the story would be enjoyed for many years.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? As my first published book, I have learned many things about the publishing and publicity process. I have especially enjoyed "setting up shop" at festivals and special events to promote True Treasure and talk with potential customers, telling them the story of how it came about. The children get excited to pick out a treasure coin from the treasure chest to go along with the book.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? This book was definitely God-inspired, as it came to me as I told the story. I have always enjoyed reading. Now living in North Carolina, I have enjoyed reading all of the Nicholas Sparks novels, and was even an extra in the movie The Longest Ride in the rodeo scenes. I have enjoyed reading books from the other authors at Smith Mountain Lake. My son Adam is my favorite artist!
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The story is definitely a fantasy adventure, but with themes of trust, generosity, and faith. It is a timeless adventure, and I hope it touches people's hearts and is loved by children and adults alike.
