Trick Geography USA will help students remember the names of the US states, capitals and major bodies of water, mountains, deserts, and plains through fun mnemonic tricks. Students tackle regions at a time, and learn to see shapes that correspond to the names of the states; for example, the shape of Pennsylvania is drawn to be a box of pencils. Capitals are taught by adding an object to the initial state drawing that sounds like the capital name - so Harrisburg becomes a hairy bird drawing with pencils. Finally, geographical features are connected with simple sentences that build on the country name. Students fill in the blanks with the state name, capital name, or body of water/mountain/landscape feature. Students learn states first and then progress to capitals and other information.
Grades 3 & Up. The elementary schedule covers two maps per week (for a 7-week program) while the middle school & up schedule covers two to three maps per week (for a 5-week program).
