Redeemed5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful!February 6, 2018RedeemedQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have read nearly all of Jerry Bridges' books, beginning with The Pursuit of Holiness, which utterly transformed my way of thinking when I was younger. Bridges has a gift; he can explain Biblical truths in an understandable,every-mansort-of way. His writing style makes the reading enjoyable and his wisdom makes the truths contained with the pages profound.
This re-release of Transforming Grace is especially wonderful because it includes a Study Guide to help the reader more fully comprehend and remember what they are learning. Highly recommended to both individuals who want to study God's Word in more depth or groups who are looking to study together.
Kendra5 Stars Out Of 5Transforming GraceJanuary 10, 2018KendraQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've heard good things about books by Jerry Bridges. Several of his books have been bestsellers, collectively selling over 3.5 million copies. This is the first one I've read, and it was a blessing.
God's grace...two words with many shades of meaning and misunderstanding. Bridges' begins by showing our complete unworthiness of God's grace and our total inability earn or deserve any merit with God. He goes on to answer questions such as: Does God have the right to grant or withhold his blessing? Does God's grace mean we do not have to obey his commands? and, How does a biblical view of grace protect us from legalism and license? He also discusses various meanings of grace, how to appropriate God's grace in our lives, and how God's grace is extended through us to others.
Bridges' writing is firmly anchored in Scripture and each concept is carefully and fully developed. This book is definitely "meat" that requires some chewing, but is well-worth the time and effort.
First published in 1991, this new edition of Transforming Grace is now available with an in-depth discussion guide for group study.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher (Tyndale) in exchange for my review.
Cricket5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Compass to Look at GraceJanuary 8, 2018CricketQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Grace.
This one word says so much to so many and yet nearly defies an adequate definition. Beyond the definition itself comes a diverse set of understandings of its meaning depending on whom you speak with and what informs their knowledge and experience with the word. Many authors have written books, dissertations, and articles about it. Sermons on the subject abound.
When Jerry Bridges writes about grace, there is no question that the reader will experience a depth of riches to be mined. In Transforming Grace the reader will not be disappointed and be challenged to examine whether or not he or she has fully embraced the gift it is.
If you have never read this book or if you have not read it for some time, this book can provide a great compass for the journey into 2018. There is much to digest that will nourish your relationship with the Lord and help you to rest in Him with greater assurance.
JanetBelton, TXAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5For Deeper UnderstandingJanuary 6, 2018JanetBelton, TXAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5An updated release of an amazing book, Transforming Grace is an eye-opening read. Author Jerry Bridges systematically takes his readers through several different facets of God's grace. His strongest point: God doesn't offer grace to the unbeliever then turn into a harsh task master. His grace is for everyone at any and every point along their spiritual journey. And everyone needs God's grace.
I loved the way Bridges used familiar Bible stories to illustrate his points, circling back to them in each new chapter to show what they revealed about our God. I also appreciated the examples he shared from his ministry and personal life.
This book is designed not only for personal reading, but for Bible study as well. An eight lesson discussion guide following the thirteen chapters makes it perfect for small groups. If you are looking for a clearer understanding of the grace God offers to you, I recommend this book. I received my complimentary copy through the Tyndale Blog Network, so I could share my opinion with you.
Deuce SkunksSpringfield, MOAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Living By God's Grace Every Single DayDecember 18, 2017Deuce SkunksSpringfield, MOAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the 2017 edition of Transforming Grace by Jerry Bridges, which has an 8-lesson discussion guide included in the back for personal or group study. Being completely unfamiliar with Jerry's work prior to picking up this book, I found it to be a very thorough and in-depth study of the principles behind living in grace, rather than simply being saved by grace but continuing to live in our own strength.
For anyone who has already read several (and I do mean several) books on the art of living everyday in God's grace, there probably won't be a lot of "new" information here - that's in part because of the original copyright date of 1991 in the front of the book. But don't let that deter you from reading it. If I had to recommend just one book on living in grace, this would be it.
Starting by discussing our own spiritual bankruptcy and why we need God's saving grace, Jerry uses personal and scriptural stories to elaborate on how God's saving grace is so overwhelming and why it needs to be at the core of our relationship with Him. However, as Jerry is quick to point out, this is not a book on God's saving grace. That form of God's grace is eagerly shared and seldom overlooked by Christians. Instead, the majority of Transforming Grace focuses on what it means to us, as Christians, to live everyday by God's grace. How we should behave, treat others, and allow God's wonderfully amazing grace to reflect in every aspect of what we do on a daily basis.
Focusing on the parables of the generous landowner and the unmerciful servant, Jerry lays out a blueprint for Christians to truly embrace God's love and grace, while sharing it with their neighbors. Don't get me wrong, this is not a book of checklists and legalism; in fact, it's the exact opposite. It's a book of finding and embracing God's grace through your own personal walk with Him, rather than focusing on how the rest of the world perceives your relationship.
As stated before, I would recommend this book to any Christian who is seeking to understand more about God's grace and how to live by grace on a daily basis. Unlike a lot of books on this subject, Transforming Grace is written for both men and women, and would be just as valuable to a new believer as a longtime follower. 5/5 stars.
