Product Description

Taking a cue from Ecclesiastes--"Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind"--David W. Henderson encourages us to move beyond merely trying to open up a bit of margin or to say no once in a while, and to take a purposeful step back from our lives to examine those internal and external dynamics that propel us into busyness and hurry. Sharing honest stories about his own struggles, he helps us explore the way the Scriptures frame time--understanding our times, making the most of the time, and trusting God with the rest.

Publisher's Description

There's never enough time. So we try to cram as much as possible into what little time we have--work, friends, play, rest. But what if How do I fit it all in? isn't the right question?

Scripture has a lot to say about time. Taking a cue from Ecclesiastes--"Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind"--and drawing on everything from Augustine's Confessions to conversations with air traffic controllers, David W. Henderson encourages us to move beyond merely trying to open up a bit of margin or to say no once in a while, and to take a purposeful step back from our lives to examine those internal and external dynamics that propel us into busyness and hurry. Sharing honest stories about his own struggles with busyness, he helps readers explore the way the Scriptures frame our time--understanding the times, making the most of the time, and trusting God with the rest.

For anyone who is tired of feeling the push and pull of our time-bent culture, this book will be a welcome invitation to rest and to live artful and faithful lives marked by peace and tranquility.

I am convinced that God has a sense of humor. When I signed up to review this book, I was in a period of rest. School was not in full swing, my job was easy and my family life was lovely and uncomplicated. When I finally received this book, I felt the very opposite of when I ordered this book. The irony wasn't lost on me either as I realized that the title of the book was the very thing I was lacking. Needless to say, I put off reading this book as I was too overwhelmed and busy and am now finally getting a chance to share with you what I read. Tranquility, written by David W. Henderson, is a book about quieting our souls so we can understand the sense of peace we are supposed to have. Using the American culture as a reference, he shows the readers how we have trained ourselves to fill our lives with anything to make us busy. I understand this first hand and it was a painful and timely reminder that my to-do list should not take priority over my relationship with Christ. Henderson uses Scripture and personal stories to make this an easy read and I would recommend it to anybody feeling as if their life was spiraling into never ending busyness. I am grateful that God meets me exactly where I am, even if He has to send me a blatantly obvious reminder of what I need to be doing :) This book is a 4/5!

This book was given to me by Baker Publishing for my honest review.
