Karen2 Stars Out Of 5September 9, 2010KarenThis book is a great companion or supplement to a more comprehensive high school Human Anatomy and Physiology textbook, but is not detailed enough to be a stand-alone text for high school students. It does contain short-answer questions and instructions for labs that can be used in conjunction with another curriculum. Information on each system of the body is contained on one or two pages of written text (compared to 20-30 pages in a typical high school text) and the rest of each chapter consists of pages of exercises and labs.

Tell us a little about yourself. High School Science educator for 13 years and an additional 9 years as a science director for a school district with 28,000 students. Co-author of the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in Anatomy and Physiology.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to create a supplemental high school workbook with easy-to-find, household, cheaper lab items to assist home schooled and/or small school district teachers with affordable labs. I also wanted to provide the often "left out" aspects of traditional Anatomy and Physiology textbooks such as interesting stories, ways to remember difficult items, the history of Anatomy and Physiology, and of course the high-school based labs.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? As has been mentioned in a couple of reviews, the initial intent of this workbook (lab manual) was just that -- to be a supplement to a traditional Anatomy and Physiology book. Anatomy books are written for technical schools or universities and not with a high schooler in mind. If they come with a lab manual at all, there are labs requiring expensive equipment such as machines to measure electrochemical reactions in nerve cells, etc. which are not practical for most teachers -- so high school teachers end up writing most of their own labs versus using the lab manuals which are included with texts (if any).
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I have received much positive feedback from teachers and have retained the rights to any more new editions or edits of my original work. I also wrote another book for Walch called Differentiated Instruction for Science geared toward the middle school science student. I am now working on a new project from TCM (Teacher Created Materials) writing for their Discovering Science Through Inquiry Series. I cannot tell the title until after release. :)
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My influences are definitely my family -- my husband and children and also my parents and grandparents when they were alive and of course my church. My favorite authors are Robert Frost, Robin Cook, Patricia Cornwell or any fiction mystery, crime or science writers.
