Product Description

An Irish-born son far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He's come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and start a farm, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he'd wagered, especially when Maggie Linden's father makes him an offer he shouldn't accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the annual Drayton Stakes at Nashville's racetrack--the richest race run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance, and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder, Maggie's father--aging, yet wily as ever--makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail--Maggie must marry a man she's never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

Cullen and Maggie need each other in order to achieve their dreams. But their stubborn, wounded hearts--and the escalating violence from a "secret society" responsible for lynchings and midnight raids--may prove too much for even two determined souls.

Publisher's Description

A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever.

An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance—and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder—Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail—Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

Editorial Reviews

“This wonderful story of God’s love and faithfulness is set against the beauty of the Tennessee hills. Fans of Cathy Marie Hake and Deeanne Gist will enjoy this book.”
“No insta-love here! Readers get to experience the growing attraction between the headstrong and determined Maggie and the swoon-worthy Cullen. The deeply drawn characters move the story along at a steady pace – even Bucket, the dog, and Bourbon Belle, the mare, will win readers over.” – 4 star review
“Alexander (To Whisper Her Name) continues her ode to the magnificent Belle Meade Plantation, using it to illustrate questions of race, faith, and loyalty that continue to haunt today. Richly drawn secondary characters add depth, humor, and a sobering perspective on how Reconstruction affected racial relations, social status, and economic fortunes. Fans will appreciate, and applaud the smooth merging of social commentary and a sweet love story.”
“Strong characters, a sense of the times, and the themes of love, friendship, and the importance of loyalty and determination make this a triumph.” – starred review
“The quiet undertones of seeking redemption while keeping the faith should easily satisfy Tamera Alexander’s growing fan base.”

Ive read all of Ms. Alexanders books, and To Win Her Favor is a wonderfully written continuation of the Belle Meade Plantation series. The plot is solid and the characters are well developed and believable. Certain scenes in the novel evoke emotion so well that I found myself crying over the characters experiences. The dialogue is well written, and I enjoyed reading about the plantation setting. Ms. Alexander does a great job of bringing the era to life by painting vivid pictures of the land, the thoroughbred racing scene, and the post-Civil War climate in Nashville. The discussion questions and the lemon cookie recipe at the end of the book are nice bonuses too. To Win Her Favor was a pleasure to read and had a satisfying conclusion with room for a sequel. Id love to read Savannahs story! I also highly recommend Ms. Alexanders other novel series: the Belmont Mansion Novels, Timber Ridge Reflections, and Fountain Creek Chronicles.

I've heard good things about Tamera Alexander's writing for far too long. I've been looking for the opportunity to read one of her book sand when the opportunity represented itself of course I couldn't refuse. This book is actually the second in a series, but reading it first probably has no effect on anything. The plot was interesting. I've seen many comment that Maggie's marriage is arranged, but I disagree since she is given the choice. I liked the focus on race horses and the nineteenth century. The Civil War era is one I enjoy reading, so reading this one, right after the War, was pretty entertaining.

I liked the characters for the most part. Maggie probably bothered me more than any of the main or supporting cast. She is a Christian, but has some strong prejudices that make her look rather ugly. I understand that we probably all have some sort of prejudice but I suppose since I knew who she was prejudiced against it bothered me. But I give Maggie the benefit of the doubt because when she wasn't acting a bit spoiled she was a good character. I liked Cullen a lot. Even though he was withholding secrets and whatnot, he was a good man who cared about others. Just a nice guy. He had his issues to work out, but work them out he did. Then there were other supporting characters like Ethan, Gilbert--Maggies father--and one of my favorites, an adorable little former slave girl named Kizzy--a character filled with spunk, something I love.

While the book had a pretty well paced plot, a bit of that plot disconcerted me. There was a lot of discussion into marital kinds of things and lots of love going on, though the scenes never went far, I feel at times they went too far for the market this book is selling to. So I wouldn't recommend anyone reading it but adults. I'm nineteen and even I felt a little awkward around parts of it. The story also has some frightening sequences thanks to racism and violence.

Besides a couple of things I enjoyed this story. Pretty well written. I hope I can get my hands on another of Tamera Alexander's novels to see if I enjoy it even more than this one.

    Hmm, a historical novel?

One where the storyline involves a marriage of convenience?

Written by amazing storyteller Tamera Alexander?

Why, of course Ill be glad to read it!

I think Ive mentioned a time or two how much I love historical fiction. Reading stories that are inspired by times past -and the men and women who lived it simply pulls at my heartstrings. So of course as always it was pure enjoyment picking up the latest in the Belle Meade Plantation series. First few pages in, I was wowed away! The history The feelings

    WOW!

To Win Her Favor is definitely a read that goes straight to the heart. Embedded with deep and unforgettable emotion, this novel had me thinking about its many twists and turns long after my bedtime. Until I couldnt help but finish off the last few chapters. I loved how unique Maggie and Cullen were from any of Alexanders previous characters. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know them. The only problem I had with this novel were the romantic scenes that made me a bit too uncomfortable. But all in all, To Win Her Favor was still an enjoyable read. Now I eagerly looked forward to reading more of Savannah Darbys story!

Oh how I have loved and enjoyed Tamera's previous novels. I could trust her content.

Unfortunately, this one crossed the line for me. What happened Tamera? I am so disappointed!

In previous novels Tamera has done such an incredible job of developing characters and the story line, however in this book it seems that instead, more time was put into creating unnecessary sexual scenes which have no place in Christian fiction!! The story line in this book was o.k., but not up to the previous novel in the series as well.

Again, this in NOT clean Christian fiction!

How does this book end up with such high ratings from a presumably Christian audience? I have read every one of Tamera Alexander's books and especially appreciated her earlier writing. If there was one thing that her readers could count on, it was that her books did not contain sexual scenes. That trust has been broken in this book. If an author wants to write that sort of content, there is certainly a market for it. But please don't do so under the guise of Christian fiction. Truly sad to see this product put out as a Christian offering.
