Danger is a daily reality for Ken Roberts and the European immigrant families who scratch out a living in the deep coal mines of Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. In a camp of Lebanese immigrants, Rosalind Gilbran lives with her grandfather and grandmother. Ken takes a walk on the mountain and meets the beautiful Rosa. After a few more chance meetings, Ken gives the petite gypsy a Bible and tells her about his Savior. When Rosa's grandparents discover she has been secretly meeting a "coal cracker," they hastily accept an offer of a marriage contract for Rosa to a cruel and hot-tempered man. Christian Historical Romance set in the 1920s. I grew up near Wilkes-Barre, PA where the story is set. It"s a nice, rural area. As you drive through the area you can still see steam and smoke coming up through breaks in the ground from underground fires in the old mines. This is a story of differences in race and culture among immigrant communities, intolerance and profiling. A member of the "gypsy" community, Rosalind who is a Lebanese girl rides with her Grandfather, a peddler in the area. When searching in the woods for medicinal plants for her Grandmother, she meets Ken, who is a miner who comes there to read his bible and relax. They sit and talk each time they meet, learning about each other. Ken has been raised as a Christian and shares his faith and teaching with Rosalind. She learns that he is a man who will respect and honor her, unlike the man from her community who wants to marry her. When they get closer they find that neither family will accept them as a couple. A great example of Christian faith and trusting in God.

I enjoyed both of these inspirational stories, with tender romances that began with friendships between people from different backgrounds. Set in the 1920's and 1930's, with people struggling to make a living, the first one especially dealt with prejudice between cultures and classes. The second one also had two people with a social barrier due to hard times mainly.

I really liked both of the young men, who were hardworking, sincere believers, with kind hearts, struggling to overcome their financial hardships in honorable ways, looking to God for help and direction. The young women were also kind and tender, desiring to love their families, and yet follow their heart. There were many faith discussions that were encouraging to read, especially in the first story. Both were fairly well written. They reminded me of two of my favorite old movies, How Green Was My Valley and The Journey of Natty Gann; they had similar settings and themes, with a nostalgic feel, although the plots were quite different.

Recommend to readers who enjoy clean, historical romances with faith. (Both stories had been previously published under the same titles.)
