Author Info

Samuel Logan Brengle (1860–1936) was a student pastor in Boston when he experienced what he would come to call the Blessing—-sanctification by the Holy Spirit. Three years later he became a Salvation Army officer, going on to attain the rank of commissioner. He traveled throughout the United States and around the world promoting personal holiness. The devotional readings in this book are drawn from Brengle's nine books on the subject, updated for the modern reader.

You may know "Take time to be holy" as the first line of a familiar hymn. This was my thought when I first saw the title of this devotional book. As we seek a life of holiness, we are seeking to be ever closer to God. This book contains devotionals for each day of the year. Each day begins with a scripture and then has a short writing by Brengle.

Samuel Logan Brengle was born in 1860 and received Christ as a teenager. He was a preacher and an officer in the Salvation Army. His preaching and writing built upon teachings of holiness by John Wesley and others. "Take Time To Be Holy" is a compilation of works from Brengle's writings, which have been edited for length and compiled into this devotional book.

This compact book with a padded cover is convenient to take with you or to remain in your study area. It would make a great gift for someone or for yourself if you are looking for something to study in the new year. I enjoyed reading the devotionals. In the front of the book, Hostetler wrote about the life of Brengle and I found this most interesting.

"Take Time to Be Holy" by Samuel Logan Brengle is an inspirational 365 day devotional. Each daily devotion begins with a scripture verse followed by an excerpt from one of Brengle's nine books on holiness.

Brengle, born in 1860, spent his life in serving the LORD as a pastor and officer in the Salvation Army. The book begins with a brief biography explaining how Samuel Brengle felt called to live a life totally devoted to serving God and seeking holiness.

Though most of the writings in this volume are over 100 years old, I found the message of this little devotional to be very timely. Once we have accepted Jesus as our LORD and Savior it is so important to seek His will for our lives- to seek a life of holiness, wholly unto to God. A word not often used today is sanctification. Sanctification is the transformation that occurs in our hearts and lives once we have accepted Jesus as Savior, the casting off of the old self and the working of the Holy Spirit within us to make us a new creation.

Sanctification truly is the theme of this book - how to submit our naturally sinful will unto God's better plan of living a life of purity and holiness. The book emphasizes that we should not become discouraged in our quest, as it is only through the power of God's Holy Spirit we can be holy.

I would highly recommend this devotional to anyone seeking to draw closer to Jesus. I have not yet finished reading this book, but already I have been so very blessed and encouraged. I find myself reflecting on the devotion I read in the morning throughout the day, and praying that the LORD would help me to live a life of holiness!

"Take Time To Be Holy" written by Samuel Logan Brengle is what I like to call a nice "light" Devotional Book. It was really not what I expected.

While it is an enjoyable read, it is the type of book that contains "daily" devotions which remind me of "morning or "before bedtime" reading. By this, I mean it would take may 5 minutes to read. They seem to be uplifting but by the same token, don't seem to require much meditation or thought.

It reminds me of a "beginners" book of devotions. "Spiritual food" for a person who is just beginning to read the Word of God, and is not quite able to handle a devotion full of "substance". Much like a baby needing milk to drink at first rather than trying to eat meat.

I liked it for the purpose of giving me inspiration. I read a devotion before I type my blog post, and then "take off" from there with my own thoughts and Biblical research on the devotional topic which I read.

If you are looking for a Devotional Book that involves a good deal of thought, or provocation to study, this is not the book for you. If you are a beginner who is just getting started, then I would say "full steam ahead"! This book is just right.

Daily Devotional For a Walk in Holiness

Take Time To Be Holy is a daily devotional compiled of the many writings of Samuel Logan Brengle. Edited by Bob Hostetler, each page is around 300 words or less and can be read in minutes, however, the reader will likely be meditating on the daily inspirations for much longer. It is first worth mentioning that Brengle (1860-1936) was actively involved and commissioned in the Salvation Army, where he dedicated a portion of his life's work to serving others. A large part of Brengle's work in preaching and ministering was in encouraging listeners and readers to better understand the requirement of holiness. Brengle likewise had a true gifting for teaching in practical ways on the "how to" aspect of achieving such a walk with God.

Throughout Take Time to Be Holy, the reader becomes saturated with rich biblical reference as well as Brengle's personal insight and encounters through his journey in walking closely with God as he pursued holiness with complete abandonment. The benefits of living a consecrated Christian life flow from page to page and draw the reader into a place of deep hunger and desire to live a pure life in communion with the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The simple and yet powerful way in which Brengle teaches on walking in "the light that you have" while practicing deliberate obedience to God's word, will compel you to grow deeper in your relationship with God.

Take Time to Be Holy is a purposeful, daily meditation that intermingles scripture with testimony as it exhorts the reader to abandon fruitless pursuits and to enter into a matchless fellowship with the Lord. This devotional leaves the reader feeling refreshed, motivated, and energized to chase after God with a true heart.

This book deals with what can be a difficult subject to understand (holiness/sanctification), and does so in a daily devotional style, with short readings. This can present its own challenges, I'm sure, as many theologians could not fit into such a short parameter with cogent insight. Hostetler (using Brengle's writings as the source material) not only accomplishes it, but includes some of Brengle's stories in such a manner as to illustrate a complex and misunderstood doctrine. I found the style was eminently readable, the excerpts interesting, and the strong tie-in to scripture to be very helpful. I recommend this highly.
