Tell us a little about yourself. Growing up in a missionary family in Alaska in the fifties and sixties, I discovered Christian fiction. Thus began my lifelong relationship with books and my desire to write Christian novels. After 25 years of writing short stories, articles, devotionals, and church school curriculum for my denomination, in 2002, I published "Frontiers of Faith," the story of my grandparents' experiences as pioneer missionaries to Alaska (1917-1982). "Till the Storm Passes By" is my first novel in my Alaskan Waters series of historical fiction. I am also an ordained minister, teacher, and musician. My husband and I have pastored churches together in New York State for 35 years and now live in the Mid-Hudson River Valley. We have one son and five grandchildren.
What was your motivation behind this project? As I researched the nonfiction book about my grandparents, I came across several incidents that triggered my imagination, and the idea for my Alaskan Waters series was conceived. While showcasing the majestic beauty of Alaska in my stories, I explore God's love and human love, forgiveness and reconciliation, rebellion and redemption, fear and faith--important themes we all struggle with.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope above all else that readers will come along with my characters on a life-changing journey to Alaska, "The Last Frontier," and find their faith in God renewed and strengthened.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? It's been a lot of hard work over a long period of time, but I'm thrilled to be accomplishing a lifelong goal. And I've brought to life in my characters the lessons I've learned in my own walk with God.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My parents and grandparents transmitted to me a godly heritage and exemplified God's love, grace, and forgiveness. As a teenager, I read the nine novels written by my great aunt under the pen name of Zenobia Bird, and the desire to write Christian fiction was born in my heart. My husband, Bob, has always encouraged and enabled me to develop and utilize my God-given gifts.
