Product Description

Thomas: The Other Gospel is a book to answer many questions, silence some speculations about the Church, and to trace the history of an ancient document. Perrin makes available a high level of biblical scholarship to the general public. Why was not the Gospel of Thomas included in the Christian canon? What does the book reveal about early Christianity? What can the book say to us now in the twenty-first century? Perrin addresses these heated questions with wit and scholarship that is unparalleled.

Nicholas Perrin is Associate Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College Graduate School, Illinois, and the author of Thomas and Tatian: The Relationship between the Gospel of Thomas and the Diatessaron and coeditor, with Mark Goodacre, of Questioning Q.

Publisher's Description

Since its discovery in the mid-1940s, the Gospel of Thomas has aroused the interest of scholars and general readers alike. Thomas, the Other Gospel provides a clear, comprehensive, nontechnical guide through the scholarly maze of issues surrounding the Coptic text. Nicholas Perrin argues that the Gospel derives not from the era of Jesus or even the apostles but from the late second century CE. Further, contrary to what many scholars believe, he maintains that the Gospel was originally written in Syriac rather than in Greek, and he concludes that the real value of the Gospel of Thomas lies not in what it might be thought to say about the "real Jesus" but in what it tells us about early Christianity.

Perrin's book falls into two halves: main currents in scholarship on the "Gospel of Thomas" as represented in the work of three prominent scholars; Perrin's own assessment of the "Gospel of Thomas" and its value for the study of early Christianity. This is a brief but thorough introduction to the debate; I personally appreciate Perrin's own conservative conclusions concerning the origins of this text (late 2nd century) and its real value (a window into a particular stream of the early church and not into the "Jesus of history," in contrast to more sensationalist writers). The chapter on the Jesus presented in Gospel of Thomas is alone worth the (bargain) price of this book and a good treatment of the "other Jesus" in fringe circles of the early church.

This book does not have the writtings from the gospel of Thomas.

    Much speculation on everything else.

The only concrete info is where it was found and by whom,

other than that its good for kindling a fire.
