Ron1 Stars Out Of 5The author is more significant than the workJanuary 28, 2017RonQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I was tempted to buy this set, but something about the author's name bothered me. When I looked it up, I remembered who he was. Gerhard Kittel was captured by the French in 1945, and he died in 1948 while awaiting trial for war crimes. He was an ardent Nazi, and advocated persecution of German Jews well in advance of the publication of Germany's anti-Semitic legislation. Much of this work was written while Kittel was actively involved in supporting the Nazi party, in producing anti-Semitic propaganda, and in providing theological justification for the persecution of the Jews. That makes the "theology" of this work very suspect. The late William F. Albright, an outstanding Biblical scholar, wrote of Kittel that, ""In view of the terrible viciousness of his attacks on Judaism and the Jews, which continues at least until 1943, Gerhard Kittel must bear the guilt of having contributed more, perhaps, than any other Christian theologian to the mass murder of Jews by Nazis." Given that, I chose not to purchase this set.
