Publisher's Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Dress comes a new captivating novel of secrets, romance, and two women bound together across time by a shared dream.

Tenley Roth’s first book was a runaway bestseller. Now that her second book is due, she’s locked in fear. Can she repeat her earlier success or is she a fraud who has run out of inspiration?

With pressure mounting from her publisher, Tenley is weighted with writer’s block. But when her estranged mother calls asking Tenley to help her through chemotherapy, she packs up for Florida where she meets handsome furniture designer Jonas Sullivan and discovers the story her heart’s been missing.

A century earlier, another woman wrote at the same desk with hopes and fears of her own. Born during the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn is the daughter of the old money Knickerbockers. Under the strict control of her mother, her every move is decided ahead of time, even whom she’ll marry. But Birdie has dreams she doesn’t know how to realize. She wants to tell stories, write novels, make an impact on the world. When she discovers her mother has taken extreme measures to manipulate her future, she must choose between submission and security or forging a brand new way all on her own.

Tenley and Birdie are from two very different worlds, but fate has bound them together in a way time cannot erase.

I finally understand what everyone has been raving about! I may be a late bloomer but I'm definitely on The Writing Desk's cheer team now! Especially cheering because this is a dual timeline story. Birdie with all the pressures of belonging to the upper class during the Gilded Age and Tenley with the pressures of living up to the expectations that come from belonging to a literary family. There are interesting parallels in these two heroine's stories though a century separates them. Difficult mother/daughter relationships and both chasing dreams as they find the courage to be true to themselves.

And then there are the men in their lives. Blissful sigh. Elijah in the historical timeline and Jonas in the contemporary one. Men of integrity and faith. Elijah determined to do the honorable thing for his family's estate despite his love for Birdie. Be still my heart. This star-crossed lovers story had me on tenterhooks!

I'm still having heart palpitations over steadfast, easy-going, steeped-in-faith Jonas. And I'm guilty of feeling like Tenley didn't deserve him in the beginning. But Jonas proved me wrong and humbled me in the process. Because he looks past the baggage and insecurities and sees Tenley as the beautiful daughter of God she is. Their witty dialogue still has me smiling. So much fun in the give and take between these two. But so much heartache too. And so much hope as Tenley finally begins to grasp the concept of grace and the hope it can bring to her future.

The Writing Desk is the kind of novel you want to savor and share and read over again just because it makes you feel alive and hopeful and inspired to live out your dreams the way Birdie and Tenley do.

I have to be honest and say that I really enjoy Rachel Hauck's writing. However, so far this is my FAVORITE book by her. The story touched my heart...and I appreciated Birdie's fight or independence. If you enjoy historical romances and can follow the "dual-time" with flashbacks this is an amazing story...and it would make a wonderful movie in my opinion!

A historical fiction and contemporary romance combined couldn't get any better! Reading a book by Rachel Hauck is almost like reading two. I love reading a story from the past and then seeing the impact on the life of someone in the present.

I felt such a connection to our two heroines, early twentieth century Birdie and modern day Tenley. While our dreams may be different, our fears are very much the same. This book was an encouragement and inspiration in making your own path in life; not just following someone else's because it's already been traveled.

Everything about this book deserves a five star rating!

t takes a skilled author to introduce what appears to be two completely separate story lines and distinct time periods and give both the correct emphasis and both stories compelling enough to take an audiences interest.

Rachel Hauck does just that with the magnificent Writing Desk. WIth deft hand she introduces us to Tenley Roth- a harried one hit wonder author who is now expected to produce her second book with as much success and hype as benefits the recipient of all the awards she has had lavished upon her.

Problem - shes faced with a severe and complete writers block. She faces the most frightening thing for any writer - a white sheet of paper. Seeking an escape and also on the begging request of her estranged mother - she moves to Florida and a hopeful change to produce something worthy of her publisher.

There she discovers not only a painful past but also an old writing desk which seems to call to her of past stories and a shared history. Little does she realise that a century earlier - another young lady sat at the same desk faced with surprisingly similar trials and tribulations.

Birdie Shehorn was born to privilege and money - but with that comes strict controls and invisible chains. She wants to break the conventions put upon her and tell stories, write novels and make an impact on her world.

The unique way this story is told is simply beautiful and so so engaging as a reader. I literally devoured it in two sitting over two days. With rich detail and stunning story telling this is one not to miss.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via The Fiction Guild, and was not required to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

I agreed to review The Writing Desk By Rachel Hauck through Booklookbloggers. I thought I clicked on book in print but I got the ebook instead. I like the font because it makes the book very easy to read. The author is an artist at blending characters through an inanimate object. I am not one for reading fiction book but this book is hard to put down. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to go on a historical ride through time.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review.
