Leona Speicher got the "sister" she'd always dreamed of the day Gloria Gingerich and her family moved to Lancaster County Amish farmland. The Arkansas newcomers seem to be everything a devout Plain family should be, and Leona can't help comparing Gloria's engaging young parents to her own.
Leona's cousin shows a romantic interest in Gloria around the same time as Gloria's older brother expresses his fondness for Leona--it seems likely the two young women will marry into each other's families, remaining close friends for life. Thus, Leona is shocked when the Gingeriches suddenly pack up and disappear after being expelled from the church for reasons no one will discuss. Despite Leona's pleas, Gloria goes with them, leaving more than one broken heart behind.
When Gloria unexpectedly contacts Leona after a silence of several years, Leona makes up her mind to persuade her friend to return to Lancaster County and the Amish ways. Leona's fiancé, the deacon's son, is alarmed when Leona decides to go after Gloria. Will Leona's dearest wish lead to her own undoing?

Equally simple is see only the good things of another family and be blinded to the problems. The source of this is discontentment. That is exactly where Leona Speicher finds herself. Her heart yearns for her family to be like her best friends Gloria Gingrich: Fun, affectionate, and close. She idolizes them and fantasizes about becoming a permanent household member. To make the situation even more ideal, Leona and Gloria are as close as best friends can be.
Her heart is broken when the Gingrich family is shunned from the Amish church, disappearing in the night without even saying goodbye. Leona never quits missing her friend and mourns her absence for 3 long years. Out of the blue Gloria reaches out to her begging her to come for a visit. The family has abandoned their Amish faith and turned English. Leona wrestles whether or not to go. She still loves her friend deeply but isnt sure not only what to expect but also putting herself in the English world.
With the purpose of trying to bring back with her and become Amish again she decides to go.
The trip turns out to be more than the rescue mission she had anticipated. She is shocked and disheartened by what she finds not only Gingrichs lives now but what they had been all along. A beautiful story of love, true friendship, and learning to see the wonderful gifts God has given us.
I received this book Bethany House Publishing and was not required to give a positive review. The opinions I have stated are my own.
Mrs. W.5 Stars Out Of 5ExcellentNovember 29, 2016Mrs. W.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I always enjoy reading books by Beverly Lewis. She is a trusted author when it comes to Amish Fiction.
This story is about Leona, a young Amish woman, and her community. I loved reading about the way the Amish live, their values, their convictions and their way of life.
Leona's neighbor, and dear friend, Gloria moves away suddenly with her family. There is some intrigue and suspense as we go along until we find out why they all moved away.
It turns out that Gloria's family became "English," which means her old order Amish parents decided to become worldly and give up their Amish life. I have never read an Amish story from this perspective, where the parents themselves decide to leave the Amish way of life. It was sad for Gloria, but we get to see her experience the world and then decide if she wants to come back and become Amish again.
Through it all, Leona stays faithful to the Amish ways and to the dear young man she intends to marry. I found her to be inspiring!
This was a very good read, which includes some good Biblical wisdom throughout.

Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: female2 Stars Out Of 5The WishNovember 24, 2016Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1My thoughts: First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free paperback copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, as with most readers of Amish fiction I was introduced to Beverly Lewis by her first books and I fell in love. I couldn't wait for the newest Beverly Lewis books to hit the shelves.
THE WISH is a stand-alone women's fiction Amish story. There is no plot, the story is told and not shown and I felt distant from the characters, and worse, I didn't care what happened to them!
The intro - above - says that Beverly Lewis is the top Amish author, I suggest that Ms. Lewis has lost her title. There are so many better Amish authors out there. I won't name names because if I do, they will be MY favorites, and there are Amish authors out there that are fan-favorites and I won't read their books. But if you tried THE WISH and didn't like it, don't give up on the genre. Try another author. However, if you love Beverly Lewis and women's fiction set in Amish country, then give THE WISH a try. Don't take my word for it because you opinion is the one that matters.
Lori5 Stars Out Of 5The Wish By Beverly LewisNovember 4, 2016LoriQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5s always, I'm never disappointed in Beverly's stories and this was no exception!
I love how she portrays friendship across the miles and even through difficult times. (I'd love to have a friend like that).
Leona and Gloria have a special friendship since day 1. I'm so glad that even after the many years it was still intact. Gloria was still able to reach out to Leona.
I know in real life that there are ppl who are or have been friends since childhood and that is a pretty cool thing
It was a great story and as always Beverly's books give me peace. It us through Beverly that I got my start in reading Amish /Christian fiction and of course my love for Christmas as well.
I love Beverly's writing style and her ability to make her characters seem like real people that we can relate to except for one one thing, her stories always have happy endings and that's one of my favorite things about her books.
Beverly another job well done and I will reread this again.
I got a copy of this book for my honest opinion
