Publisher's Description

In this captivating retelling of a classic biblical story, Jesus shocks the town of Bethany with Lazarus’s resurrection from the dead, leading Martha—a seemingly perfect woman trapped by the secrets of her past—to hope and a new life.

Everyone in Bethany admires Martha—the perfect Jewish woman. She feeds and clothes her loved ones, looks after the family farm, and meticulously follows every precept of the Pharisees’ strict laws. But Martha is hiding a secret. At her sister’s marriage feast, she gave her heart and her innocence to a young musician who promised to return and marry her, but instead betrayed her love and abandoned her.

Seven years later, only two people in Bethany know of Martha’s secret sin: her brother, Lazarus, and Simon, the righteous Pharisee to whom Martha is betrothed. When Lazarus falls ill, Martha is faced with a choice: send for Jesus to save her dying brother—risking the wrath of Simon who threatens to betray her—or deny Jesus’ healing power and remain trapped in her tomb of secrecy and lies.

Meanwhile, on the shores of Galilee, Isa roams the wilderness, tortured by demons and knowing only that someone is waiting for him. When he is healed by Jesus, he finds that seven years have passed since his descent into madness. Isa journeys home to Bethany only to find he is too late to win back Martha’s love.

When Martha risks all to heal Lazarus, will Jesus arrive in time, or will he—like Isa—come too late?

Editorial Reviews

"A vivid retelling of a Bible story we've all heard but perhaps never completely understood in all its facets until now. With a main character human enough for us all to identify with, The Tomb is a poignant tale of secrets too long guarded, the tenacity of love, and the freeing power of grace."
The Tomb by author Stephanie Landsem brings the story of Martha, the over-anxious sister of Mary and Lazarus, into a dramatic and unexpected light. Often when we read the biblical story, we don't stop to think about who these people were, what they thought, how they lived, especially when we are unfamiliar with the culture of the day. The Tomb gives us a rich glimpse into that culture and into the lives of these characters, their hopes, their joys, their fears. You will never see Martha quite the same way again. An intriguing, fascinating read.”
“Stephanie Landsem delivers a fascinating perspective on Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Gripping yet tender, The Tomb weaves these Bethany siblings into the lives of supporting Gospel characters, beckoning readers to that poignant moment when the Son of God wept. Satisfying. Inspiring. Beautiful.”
“Stephanie Landsem has a gift for telling stories of eternal significance through the eyes of ordinary people. Powerful and tender, The Tomb carries us from the shadow of the valley of death to the glory of the resurrection, while keeping the hopes and dreams of its characters relevant to today's readers.”
“Once I picked up The Tomb I couldn’t put it down. Landsem’s novel about Martha is not only a riveting page-turner; it’s a profound and uplifting story about people transformed by faith.”
"Powerful and moving, Landsem grabs hold of the soul and never lets go. As compelling a portrait of mercy as I have ever read. Don't miss this one!"
“In Stephanie Landsem’s latest novel, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus are real enough to invite you into their Bethany home, sit you before the fire, and fill your belly with barley stew and warm bread. The Tomb is an enthralling tale, impeccably researched, full of delightful characters. As women, we have always been told to emulate Mary, the sister who chose to worship at Jesus’ feet. But Landsem’s Martha has much to teach us, about love, loyalty, honor, faith—and the true measure of a family.”
“Once again, Stephanie Landsem weaves a masterful tale of danger, intrigue, and love as she draws from the familiar story of two sisters, Mary and Martha, and their brother, Lazarus. Landsem pulls the reader into unexpected corners of history as this humble family does their best to figure out who Jesus really is and what his radical message means for them. She pulls from scripture and traditions passed down through the centuries to explore the human experience behind these beloved characters, breathing new life into the story in clever and surprising ways.”
“Landsem creates a beautiful tapestry of familiar New Testament stories, woven together with fresh insight into what it looked like to walk alongside Jesus, encountering both the mundane and the mysterious in the man who brought the kingdom even to small villages.”
“Triumphant! Landsem’s words resound with hope and healing, with freedom from the chains which bind us all.”

This is my first book by Stephanie Landsem and I loved it. I think you have to go into it realizing it is a what if work of fiction, based on some scripture and historical facts. We tend to set Biblical characters upon a pedestal and this puts it into perspective that they were human like us, with sin in their lives. I found it hard to put down, as I wanted to see where she took each person in the story. I couldn't get enough of Isa and Martha and the power of restoration, forgiveness, and redemption that it shows.

I won this book in a blog giveaway and was not required to write a review.

I love Martha. She gets a bad rap, but I've always identified with her. I also find the story of Lazarus fascinating, especially in the way Jesus interacts with Mary and Martha after Lazarus has died... Anyway, I was pretty excited about this one and I really liked it. Landsem's Martha hides a secret shame beneath a perfect exterior. She takes care of herself and her family because no one else can. When Lazarus is dying she has to decide if her secrets are worth his life. A beautiful story of forgiveness and freedom.

Of the three books in this series, so far, I think that this is the best which is saying something as the others are terrific!. Mary, Martha and Lazarus, a rich family that supports the ministry of Jesus, are the center of the story. Ms. Landsem also brings in the Madman of the Gadarenes. Yes, this is the Biblical story of Lazarus but told in a manner that we have not heard before. This is a love story that is very special. This is a story of faith that is brought out in a manner that really displays the depth of meaning for Martha. There is a lot going on in this story and Ms. Landsem knows how to take us through each event by letting us in on the lives of the participants. Ms. Landsem has given us plenty of wonderful characters to fall in love with and lots of adventure and romance. This is great storytelling and I am so looking forward to more from this wonderful storyteller.

I have spent the past few days immersed in the life of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in Bethany during the time of Jesus life. That is the wonder of Biblical fiction, and Stephanie Landsem delivers her works set in this era with perfection.

The Tomb: A Novel of Martha, is the third in the Living Water series. This particular story centers around the life of Martha, the well-known Biblical character whose life is fraught with worry and busyness. In this novelized version, Martha carries the weight of guilt and a heavy burden, seeking a peace and fulfillment that constantly eludes her troubled soul and hurting heart. Sister Mary and brother Lazarus are secure in their belief and faith in Jesus and accept Him as the messiah. Yet, barely a young man, Lazarus faces a disease that progressively steals his health and eventually claims his life.

Most people know the Bible story of Martha, her sister Mary, and the miracle of Jesus's resurrection of their brother Lazarus from the dead. In her novel, Stephanie Landsem combines her skill as an author with a few what if questions that takes readers on a journey into the beliefs and everyday lives of these very real people. It explores the doubts, fears, and faith of the characters, and how the life of each intertwined with and was impacted by the presence and teachings of the Savior.

The author bases her novels on Biblical truth and intensive research, then effectively fleshes out the story with her own imagination. She brings Bible stories to life with realistic scenes that dig deep into the actions and emotions of her characters. The impressions her characters have of themselves as well as the perceptions held by those around them within the framework of custom and culture are well illustrated.

I love the work of this author for the sensitivity and beauty she brings to events in history that were sometimes difficult and gut wrenching. Stephanie moves the story along at a pace that keeps the reader turning page after page, from the first sentence on page one to the last word on the final page. An added plus is the reading group guide that lends the book well for use as a book club read.

I would recommend this book and the entire Living Water series to anyone who enjoys Biblical fiction and a well told story.

I know I'm repeating myself, but I love a good Biblical fiction, and this is one of those goodies. Thanks for this wonderful story, Stephanie Landsem!

Martha is a woman determined to be the best woman in Bethany. She obeys every law, even the obscure ones. She has to. She has to make it up to her father for the huge sin in her life that he has hidden from the town. Because of her they have gone from wealthy to poor, and her father loses his will to live.

Even after he's gone, she still hides the truth. As does her beloved younger brother, Lazarus, who has promised her father he will take care of her. To him that means finding her a husband. He thinks the Pharisee, Simon, will be perfect for her.

Martha's life has turned into a horror story.
