In the previous story, it seemed the Miller family had weathered the storm and come out stronger. However, like real life, one storm is often preparing us for the next storm. The next storm was just starting as the story ended. One of my favorite characters throughout the Hickory Hollow books has been Ella Mae Zook, known as the Wise Woman. She was up in years but her mind was still sharp as a tack and she was able to communicate with the women in the community in a way that led them to find their own answers rather than telling them what to do. The one thing she consistently told them to do was to pray about the matter. Regardless of what else she said, prayer almost always came up in conversations with her. When you pause to think about it, Christians should always pray first. Anyone who spent time with the Wise Woman left feeling uplifted and encouraged, with sound direction for moving forward. I dare say we would all benefit more from spending time with a Wise Woman or Wise Man than all the hours spent listening to mindless chatter on the radio or TV. Most people now would rather have someone tell them what they want to hear rather than seeking Godly counsel. After reading this story, I must ask myself if I offer Godly counsel and guidance, or do I merely give my own personal opinion. I encourage you to read this book to learn what happens in the Miller family and all of their friends in the Hickory Hollow district.
