Z.F.5 Stars Out Of 5Deeply InfluentialSeptember 7, 2017Z.F.Quality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I read these books when I was in sixth grade. I forgot their names when I was in high school, but I recently went on a hunt to discover their names and author once more, for I realized just how influential they have been in my development. These books, like the Chronicles of Narnia, contain stories that have direct bearing on spiritual reality. As a simple example, when the first book introduces the main character, he is trying to escape his prison by using a file to break free of his chains. By then end of the night his file is reduced to metal dust on the floor and his chains have nary a nick. This is, of course, a metaphor. We are the prisoner in chains to our sin, and no matter how hard we try on our own power to break free of it, we are helpless. God must save us. That truth, vividly expressed in the words of Ed Dunlop, made me understand my complete inability to earn forgiveness from God.
Each of the books in this series contains similarly powerful truths. For instance, "The Golden Lamps" helped me grasp the danger of looking down on others for their sinful folly. The protagonist lives in a village where the townsfolk become obsessed with possessing certain lamps that bring prosperity to those who bear them. He sees the damage that is done by the greed of those who possess the lamps and is thoroughly put off by them. He has no desire for them. But his attitude slowly becomes self-righteous, and he becomes blind to the fact that he has his own foolish pursuit: the hunting of a magnificent stag. The stag always eludes him, but he fancies that if he can bring it in, he will be praised by the townsmen and his family for his prowess. But because he looks down on those who greedily seek the lamps, he is unable to see his own lust for the approval of men. The message is simple, biblical, and profound: beware of feeling superior to others who are in sin, for you have your own sin, though of a different sort.
When I read these books, I "knew" the Bible verses that many of the truths came from. However, I was a child. I remembered much more vividly the warnings of the books, written in story form, than I did the verses. When I found myself living in pride, it was Dunlop's stag that rebuked me, not the reminder that I had a log in my own eye. Of course, the story of the stag served to remind me of Jesus' warning, and the two warnings are the same. That is the power of these stories in the life of an adolescent. They bring life to biblical truth, showing the truths through the actions of the characters and the consequences of their actions. These stories created in my mind categories of thought that helped me understand my life through the lens of the Bible.
I highly recommend these books - for adults and children alike. But they will be especially influential in the life of a young man or woman, who will likely remember these stories and their biblical truths and warnings long after they have forgotten their titles.
Note: I cannot address in this review other aspects of these books, such as the vocabulary or their length, since I read them some time ago. However, I do remember that they were very well written.
K.K.5 Stars Out Of 5Genius!March 24, 2012K.K.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Ed Dunlop is a genius! You will be in awe as you begin to uncover how he ties together scripture with the smallest detail. The more I read, the more I wonder how much I missed. Probably why my 9 yr. old son is rereading the set...after he jumped ahead of our "family reading" and read the whole series in a matter of days! You will not be disappointed! I am getting just as much out of these as my children! Very convicting...but in a gentle way! Thought provoking! You could easily turn this into family devotion time! If I could only pick one book (other than the Bible)to buy for my children, I'd pick one of these!
barb5 Stars Out Of 5April 14, 2008barbThis is an amazing set of books. Parents, if you want to see what faith truly is, or how to serve God and be yielded to His will, these books are a must read! My 9 year old daughter read the whole set of books in a matter of days, and told me that she now understands the Bible better. I can say, without any reservation, that she is right. This series of books does help you understand the Bible better. Do not miss out on a great allegory, even better and easier to understand than Pilgrim's Progress.
Pastor Jeff Harris5 Stars Out Of 5February 27, 2008Pastor Jeff HarrisMy family has been reading the Terrestria Chronicles together as a family. We have family devotions each morning but in the evening after the supper meal, the children know that they need to clear the table quickly so they can sit and listen to me read the book to the family. We are now on book 4. The children love the Terrestria books! I love the books! They are great. I am purchasing a few more sets with the study guide to be able to give to some of our church families. I believe every Christian should read these books. They have deepened my love for my Saviour. Although the books are fiction the analogies they hold have inflamed my love and zeal for the Lord. These books keep you on the edge of your seat with excitement and anticipation. You find yourself saddened when Josiah goes the wrong way and feel excited when he gets right with the King. These books typify the Christian life and the struggles that are faced. With every trial there is truth to be learned on how to overcome. These books are not just for children but even the seasoned Christian should read and reread these books to keep their love and devotion to the Lord fresh. I wholeheartedly recommend these books.
Barb5 Stars Out Of 5February 9, 2008BarbThe truths portrayed in these books are amazing! The author has made the Christian walk come alive in story form that grips the imagination, but also teaches and convicts those with a "hearing ear". Our entire family is enjoying these books and we are recommending them to everyone!

Tell us a little about yourself. I am a children's evangelist, a father, and a grandfather. I grew up in home with no TV--therefore, I learned to love books. In the last few years, it has been a huge thrill to be able to write books that kids (and their parents) will enjoy.
What was your motivation behind this project? The Terrestria Chronicles were written to glorify the King, to cause young adult readers to love Him with all their hearts, and to challenge them to guard their hearts for Him. Sure, there are knights and castles, fierce dragons, beautiful princesses and a lot of other exciting story elements, but the focus of the series is always on the King.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that my readers will gain a sense of wonder when they realize what the King has done for them.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Writing this series made me realize just how wondrous it is to be set free from the slavery of sin and to be adopted by the King of kings.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Favorite authors: Bernard Palmer, Frank Peretti
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I would encourage parents to read the Terrestria series with their families rather than just handing the books to their kids or teens.
