Publisher's Description

This novel of page-turning action and adventure poses the question, "If a society had no knowledge of Christianity, and then a Bible were discovered, what would happen?" Four hundred years after a deadly virus and nuclear war destroyed the modern world, a new and noble civilization emerges. In this kingdom, called Chiveis, snow-capped mountains provide protection, and fields and livestock provide food. The people live medieval-style lives, with almost no knowledge of the "ancient" world. Safe in their natural stronghold, the Chiveisi have everything they need, even their own religion. Christianity has been forgotten--until a young army scout comes across a strange book. With that discovery, this work of speculative fiction takes readers on a journey that encompasses adventure, romance, and the revelation of the one true God. Through compelling narrative and powerful character development, The Sword speaks to God's goodness, his refusal to tolerate sin, man's need to bow before him, and the eternality and power of his Word. Fantasy and adventure readers will be hooked by this first book in a forthcoming trilogy.

I really like the story so far of this audiobook but haven't finished so not sure if I will continues to enjoy it but the reason I am writing this review is we were listening to this book in our car with our 4 kiddos age 11-17 but this book is NOT for children of any age, it is an adult book. I was disappointed to not know that from reading any of the descriptions. Its not really anything overtly bad or dark or foul language, its just the descriptions of some of the situations is a little too much and should be more vague for children or not even described, situations that call for descriptions and words like orgy, seductress, and saying things like "having her" are not really appropriate for children. And the amount of language spent on describing the passion between the two main characters is well, sappy and unnecessary. But all that being said I do think it can be enjoyed even by a family if it is read aloud... and the descriptive parts skipped. But then again I haven't yet finished it, decided about half way through (i think) that we couldn't listen to outloud with the kids anymore...sigh.

This book definitely held my interest and was very hard to put down. There was one part toward the end that related to a specific Bible passage, but in the book it did not turn out as well as in the Bible. I was disappointed by how they told it. They also changed a Biblical character's name which could account for a different time period and how they pronounced the name. The end of the story left room for a sequel which left me wanting to get it to see what happen next. With what happened at the end I am feeling frustrated and angry because I wanted our Lord God to come out the victor as he did in the Bible and they left the people in the story denouncing the Lord except for 2 people who were forced into exile.

"The Sword" Book One in the Chiveis Trilogy series written by Bryan M. Litfin has been released in audiobook format by Christian Audio and is available from them at Christian Audio ( and is narrated by Ray Porter.

From the back cover: Book One in the Chiveis Trilogy

Four hundred years in the future a deadly virus and colossal nuclear war destroyed the modern world. Surviving societies have returned to a chivalrous age of swords and horses. The breathtaking mountain kingdom of Chiveis lives in peace, protected from the outside world and obedient to its own gods. Though a noble civilization has emerged, Christianity has been forgotten-until a mysterious book is found. When an army scout and a beautiful farmer's daughter discover an ancient copy of the Bible, everything starts to change in Chiveis. As old beliefs give way to new faith a small group of believers encounters fierce persecution-and some of the kingdom's darkest secrets.

"The Sword" is not a fantasy novel. That is to say there are no dragons, flying horses, elves or anything of that kind. I don't mean to imply that those are bad, fantasy has its place but "The Sword" is science fiction like they used to write. A deadly virus and nuclear war has almost wiped out mankind. Now we fast forward 400 years and mankind has given up its industrial age and reverted back to a feudal lifestyle. Certainly less stressful but somehow mankind has forgotten God and is off worshipping gods of their own making. However a Bible is discovered and God is reintroduced. Now the people are divided into two camps-Those that cling to the old ways and those that believe and the persecution that develops. "The Sword" is an exciting adventure and I am looking forward to the listening to the rest of the series.

It is an injustice to say that Ray Porter is the reader of this book. Ray Porter brings his soothing voice and manages to bring to life what was originally written on pages. Mr. Porter skillfully and artistically weaves different inflections and intonations into each character permitting the reader to stop listening to an audio book and become part of the story itself. Mr. Porter does a magnificent job of creating the emotion of the moment as we travel through what Mr. Litfin had written.

I, personally, do not have time to just sit and read all the books that I would like to read so audiobooks make my life much easier. I can take the book with me in the car and play it while I am driving to work or to the store. We need the ability to fill up our commute with good Christian material that will allow us to expand our world and gain new insight into what is going on around us. Christian Audio meets that need.

I struggled alot with this book. I really wanted to like it but it just didn't grab me. I kept thinking about not finishing it but I hate to give up on books because I have had books not grab me till the very end. This one never did. I never found myself wanting to listen more as a matter of fact I was relieved several times when my commute was done so I could quit listening. I think part of the problem might be that this was not really my type of genre. Although it does have alot of action. I do agree with several other reviewers that the characters weren't very realistic. The hero and heroine were both good to the point of I was afraid I was going to get cavities because they were so sugary good. I like my characters draw more realistic as having some faults and not so good.

The narrator did a very good job with the material he was given. He had convincing voices for both males and females and distinct voices for each character.

I think that if you like action adventure set in a middle ages setting you would enjoy this book.

I received a copy for review purposes.
