The Student's Guide to Keeping an Art Journal by Barry Stebbing gives students an opportunity to keep track of their days and thoughts while creating a work of both meaning and beauty. Designed for students who may or may not have access to art instruction, this book will motivate, direct, inspire and guide students who wish to integrate art into their journaling. A supplement, not a full curriculum, this guide can be used in conjunction with How Great Thou Art Books I & II as well as The Book of Many Colors.
Featuring works from the author's own journals as examples, this resource is free-flowing and conversational in tone. Filled with plenty of encouragement, quotes, and notes on the writing/artistic life, this resource is as much about the process of journaling as about the specific content. A variety of exercise instructions are provided; the "Drawing 101" section guides students through learning to draw with different materials as they draw different scenes (portraits, trees, animals, still life). Other exercises focus on the writing aspect of journal keeping.
Students will need a journal, black drawing pen, colored pencils, drawing pencils, and a kneaded eraser.
115 pages, paperback with spiral binding. Ages 12 & up.
