Tell us a little about yourself. I have served as a minister for over thirty years and I am currently pastor of the Grace Canadian Reformed Church in Brampton, Ontario. I received the M.Div at the CRTS in Hamilton, ON and the Th.M. in Old Testament studies at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C.
What was your motivation behind this project? As a pastor I needed to understand this neglected book to give answers to questions young couples asked about it. Two common approaches that either sexualized the book or simply spiritualized the contents of the book did not seem to do justice to this love song. It seemed to me that this song celebrates the love that is again possible between a believing couple, a love that is based on God's love and the love of Christ for his people.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? A greater appreciation for God's love so that it will impact their relationship with the Lord. This will also impact the way couples learn to grow in their love for each other. An important aspect in our sexualized society is that this song helps God's people to better understand their own sexuality from a healthy Biblical perspective.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Personally this work on the Song of Songs has given me a deeper appreciation of God's love. It reveals God as one who speaks tenderly to his people even when we are not always worthy, and he remains faithful to his people even when we are not always faithful. His steadfast love means that he constantly and faithfully calls his bride to respond to him in love. The greatest joy for the bride is to know that her bridegroom is faithful. This has also positively impacted me in my role as husband and father.
