We have become such a fan around here of Randall Goodgame's Slugs and Bugs series of books, so when the opportunity arose to review his newest book in the "Society of Extraordinary Raccoon Society" series, I jumped at it!

In this delightful new children's book, "The Society of Extraordinary Raccoon Society: On Boasting", you are reacquainted with the same community of raccoons who, in the first book, were determined to break free from the thieving raccoon lifestyle. Instead of continuing on in their thieving ways, they decided to begin giving away all the things which they had stolen from others.

In this newest book in the series, young Maggie and Morty are still doing a wonderful job of giving to others, but this life of service and charity has led to their become rather proud of themselves. Now, rather than having a thieving problem, they have a boasting problem.

From wise old Chauncey they learn what the Bible has to say about giving and the importance of doing so in secret, so that we receive a reward not from this world, but from the God for Whom we serve others in the first place.

Not only is the message of this book an important one, the illustrations in it are as cute as they can be. Likewise, the quick, lyrical nature of the written words make it so fun to read aloud. I highly recommend this book, as it will not only teach your children some rather important lessons, but it will provide the whole family with some sweet and fun read-aloud memories, as well!

    * I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Society of Extraordinary Raccoon Society on Boasting, by Randall Goodgame, comes from one of my new favorite Christian, children's books series! The title may seem quite strange, but the more I read these books, the more I fall in love with the characters and the messages. The illustrations are colorful, eye-catching, and detailed. The story is rhyme-based, making the words have a song-like rhythm. I like how the author walks the reader through the process. For example, he walks the two raccoons through their struggle with boasting, to what they learn and how they apply it. I would recommend this book to any family wanting to teach their kids key lessons like this one. I say Randall Goodgame is the new Christian Dr. Seuss.

Did your kids or children try to outdo the other? Well, this book might be a good one for you and children or grandchildren. It is good for your nieces and nephews to read too. They all can learn through this book.

This book is about boasting and learning about it. Morty and Maggie learn about this though the SOERS group they join. Maggie says something that makes Morty upset.

I love the fact that these main characters need to learn about different things. They do it by making mistakes but by helping those in need in their community. This is what SOERS do and still learn lessons. Your children can learn along with with Morty and Maggie though this book.

The author does a wonderful job of teaching a lesson but also making it fun. The book does rhyme while reading the story. It is good for first-time readers as well. Children can learn to rhyme and learn a moral lesson about boasting. Learn the best way to do that through the lord.

    Fun book on Boasting

This is another Slugs and Bugs Story about a raccoon who boasted and started a fight. In rhymes the author tells the story how the raccoons learned not to boast. It is a cute story and well done, using the Scripture to tell them not to brag about their giving. The illustrations by Joe Sutphin are good, too.

Although my granddaughter loves to read these books, she always got bogged down on the Scriptural part in the middle. With no pictures and just reading, she aways lost interest immediately. As with the other Slugs and Bugs stories, the rhymes are fun but I'm not sure how much a young child actually understands the story. It might be better for older children who are learning to read themselves, but some of the words would be hard to read and understand even for them.

However, the idea is good and these are fun books for kids on Scriptural topics.

(Although a copy of this book was provided to me to review by Lifeway and B&H Kids, the opinions expressed are my own.)
