Author Bio

Raymond Briggs was born in London in 1934.  At the age of 15, he  went to Wimbeldon Art School to learn how to draw, as he wanted to become a cartoonist.  But there he was told that cartooning was not a profession for gentlemen and that he ought to be a painter.  Raymond then went on to the Slade School in London to study painting as a full-time student.  During his spare time, he began work on a portfolio of illustrations of all kinds, including jackets and a wide selection of drawings to take to publishers.  After illustrating for advertising, newspapers and books, Raymond discovered that book illustration inspired him the most, since it offered far greater variety and freedom than anything else.  Raymond has always found it unfavorable to sustain a consistent illustration style for a long period of time.  He is always seeking to try something else new and different with his work.  Some of Raymond's best known works are The Snowman , The Man , and The Bear .  The setting for The Snowman is based on Raymond's own house and garden, which is in Sussex, England at the foot of South Downs, a few miles from Brighton.

As a former school teacher, this book has always been a favorite! Here's why:

    1. The pictures are inviting to children, both in the colors chosen and in the media used (look as though pictures were drawn with colored pencils).

    2. When several pictures are on the same page, the left-to-right directionality that is so important to teaching beginning reading skills is clearly reinforced.

    3. Pictures are not only easily "read" for sequence, but also for communication of emotions through detailed facial expressions.

It is a top pick! In fact, I ordered this book as gifts for two gals who are student teaching this semester. Before wrapping them, my elderly parents (92 and 88) "read" them and were thoroughly amused, as the adventures that the little boy and snowman have, though common, are unpredictable until you turn each page; each new situation brings a knowing chuckle.

You will NOT be disappointed in buying this book. Just be sure to order this original version; others exist that have words and have an abbreviated format.

The snowman is an enchanting tale. I remember when I was a child watching the movie over and over again. I was thrilled to see this book one day when I was browing through the CBD website. This book is great for the entire family.
