Product Description

We cannot understand the Christian gospel until we know what sin is. Yet modern secular counsellors urge us to ignore both the word and what it tells us about our rebellion against God and his law. Sadly, the church too often serves as an echo chamber for such short-sighted wisdom. Although THE SINFULNESS OF SIN was written three hundred years ago, it remains an oasis of truth in a desert of lies. This book gives a clear explanation of what sin is, why it is so serious, and what we need to do about it.

Ralph Venning is not a well-known Puritan writer in the modern age but that does not limit his power as a writer who explains the Scriptures in clear terms that will impact your soul. He explains in detail why sin is contrary to the nature of God, why sin is against the good of man, why sin is the transgression of the law, and why to endure hardship and trials is so much better than to sin even once. The thoughts and arguments made in this book are not light reading; it would do the reader well to read a few pages and reflect on them before moving on to the next section. This book destroys any vestige of the belief that unglorified man can be sanctified to the point that he will not sin but it also commands that man purge sin from his life wherever it can be found.

If there is any weakness in the book it is that the author becomes tedious towards the middle of the book before his strong conclusion or that he uses a few illustrations that seem forced. But, regardless, this book is rooted firmly in Scripture and I highly recommend it to be read by all people who profess to hate the sins found in the world, the flesh, and the devil. I plan to use it in the future as a reference source and as a reminder of what I have been saved from by the grace of God.

In all seriousness, this is an extremely valuable book. You will greatly benefit from reading it, and even more so from absorbing the information inside. Many people think sin is just a 'mistake', but this is a gross understatement. Sin is much worse than a simple mistake. Dropping your bowl of cereal on the carpet is a mistake; but sin is an assault against God, and in many ways it's also an assault against your own self.If you're looking for insight about the ins and outs of sin (what it is / what it's like / its effects / etc.), then this book, "The Sinfulness of Sin", is without question the book that you're looking for. After reading Ralph Venning's The Sinfulness of Sin, it is quite likely that your testimony of sin will sound like this: "Whereas once I was blind to the supreme evilness of sin... now I see. Sin is exceedingly sinful, and I don't want anything to do with it".
