Award-Winner Carr Delivers Latest in Fantasy Saga

Victory over the dark forces during the feast of Bas-solas should have guaranteed safety for the continent. Instead, Willet and the rest of the Vigil discover they've been outsmarted by those seeking to unleash the evil that inhabits the Darkwater. Jorgen, the member of the Vigil assigned to Frayel, has gone missing, and new attacks have struck at the six kingdoms' ability to defend themselves.

Just when the Vigil thought they had quenched the menace from their enemy in Collum, a new threat emerges: assassins hunting the Vigil, men and women who cannot be seen until it's too late. The orders of the church and the rulers of the kingdoms, fearing the loss of the Vigil's members altogether, have decided to take them into protective custody to safeguard their gift. On Pellin's orders, the Vigil scatters, leaving Willet to be taken prisoner by the church in Bunard.

In the midst of this, Willet learns of the murder of an obscure nobleman's daughter by one of the unseen assassins. Now he must escape his imprisonment and brave the wrath of the church to find the killer in order to turn back this latest threat to the northern continent.

This is part of a "true" series. For the story to make sense you need to read the first book before starting this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the fantasy land that this author has crafted. The characters are so well developed and presented that I connected with them and felt their frustration as they were trying to sort out the mystery of where the danger was coming from.

The plot was filled with a lot of twists and turns that really made me focus my attention on the story to follow what was going on. This is a great book to get lost in and lose track of time.

After the defeat of Laewan at Bas-Solas, Lord Willet Dura and the other members of the Vigil believe the danger has passed. But then Willet is attacked by an invisible foe, and the illusion of peace is shattered. The group must defy the Church to save themselves and the rest of the northern continent from certain destruction. Splitting up, the Vigil will risk their lives to track down the Clast and try to discover what the Darkwater really is.

I waited a year for this book. And it was well worth the wait! Patrick Carr never fails to suck me into his story with multi-layered characters and complex plots. This world that Carr has created is so full and so fascinating, he could write novels set here for decades and never run out of material. And his characters are complex enough that they could continue to evolve over that time, and we we'd still not know their whole stories. I love this typeoftale: one that makes me feel like I'm right there, riding alongside Willet and Bolt, uncovering new clues and helping to battle the evils of the Darkwater. Wonderful!

The only downside? I'm guessing I have to wait another year for the next installment... At least I know it will be worth it!

*Note: you definitely want to read this series in order; otherwise, you will find yourself very confused. While it's not absolutely necessary, I'd suggest starting with the introductory novella, By Divine Right. Butyou really should readthe first book, The Shock of Night, before diving into The Shattered Vigil.

Someone asked me recently why I like to prefer to read fiction. Carr's Darkwater Saga is a perfect example of why. There is so much Truth woven into this fantastical tale that, even though the story is not real, I find myself growing in the knowledge of God while thoroughly enjoying being swept away to a land of magic and mystery. For me, Truth is plain in non-fiction, but Truth is alive in fiction! Especially in such a well-written story as The Shattered Vigil.

Many thanks to Bethany House Publishers for the copy of this novel for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own!

    The Shattered Vigil

    The Darkwater Saga #2

    By Patrick W. Carr

Their victory over the Darkwater forces during the feast of Bas-solas should have given them a reprieve in their war against the growing darkness. But all too soon the Vigil learns the true cost of their victory - it has provided cover for the enemy's latest attack. And the Vigil is vulnerable to this newest threat that has come against them ~ an enemy that cannot be seen.

Willet Dura has yet to gain the Vigil's trust due to the vault hidden within his mind - a vault that cannot be opened and may be linked to his night within the Darkwater Forest. Yet he, along with the street urchins he has befriended, may be the Vigil's best hope for survival. For survival has just become their greatest priority when yet another member goes missing.

With the darkness tightening its grip, the Vigil is faced with a choice reveal what they know and submit to the church. Or they scatter to the far reaches of the Northern Continent searching for answers to the questions now confronting them while staying ahead of those hunting them.

Meanwhile Willet is forced to confront his feelings for Gael and her refusal to accept his decision to leave her behind. And then there is Willet's friendship with Ealdor which was brought into question by the Vigil in The Shock of Night.

If possible this second book in the series is even better than the first and the ending leaves the reader wondering what comes next. The Shattered Vigil is the perfect name for this book as it describes the book in three words. And, yes, you do have to read the first book to fully appreciate this series.

The writing style of Patrick Carr is fantastic as it draws one into the story - one can easily see why he is an award-winning writer. If you enjoy fantasy that has a spiritual undercurrent get ready to be transported to a world where the lines between darkness and light are become harder to discern.

I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher. No review, positive or otherwise, was requiredall opinions expressed are my own.

This is the second and newly publishedin a series by Patrick W. Carr. My mistakewas choosing this book before reading the first in the series. However, the author helps to catch up those who didnt read the first book so youre not at a loss as to what is happening; although I would still recommendreading the first in the series.

Even though it really isnt the genre that Im usually drawn to, I can say that it was intriguing to read about Willet and the others who decided to fight the darkness rather than just do nothing to save their world. Mr. Carr does an amazing job with his writing of thisfantasy of the Darkwater and the characters as he describes the action scenes and the impact that the forces have upon the survivors of the Bas-solas that happened in the first series. Each scene is brought to life with imagination as he describes the characterization of each player in this book. Some will even tug at your heart as Willet and the other characters weave their way through the imaginary threat that faces them (in that they cannot see their adversary). The authors realistic description of each scene helps the reader seem a part of the scene right along with his characters. With no spoilers as to the ending and how they fare with their battles, there are twists and turns before some things come to light in the ending chapter. If youre a follower of fantasy series, this one will not disappoint.

I received The Shattered Vigil as a free copy from the publisher. No review, positive or otherwise was required. My reviews are my own honest opinion of a product.

The Shattered Vigil is a deep, epic tale!

In this second installment of The Darkwater Saga, the Vigil is racing the clock, trying to fight against the evil that revealed itself during Bas-solas. If you enjoy a story with layers upon layer upon twists upon right hooks, then you will adore this book! I really like how Patrick Carr is able to weave keen observations about life and deep, spiritual truths into the story. I loved the increased roll of the urchins. And invisible, zombie-like people? Well done, Patrick Carr. Well done.

The writing style is different, and sometimes I felt like it pulled me out of the story. There are a lot of descriptions and personal musings, and it left me wanting more dialogue and action. While the plot is superb, this is the kind of book that I need to break into smaller chunks.

Three Stars. Despite feeling pulled out of the story, I am invested in this epic tale. I want to know how it ends!

The Shattered Vigil is the second book in The Darkwater Saga. Read my review of the first book, The Shock of Night, here. You would definitely want to read the first book, The Shock of Night, before reading The Shattered Vigil. While each book (thus far) deals with a specific problem, the events of the second book are built on an important foundation laid in the first book.

I received a copy of The Shattered Vigil by Patrick W. Carr from Bethany House Publishers, a division of Baker Publishing Group. All opinions expressed are my own.
