Acclaimed Writing Team Pair Up Again for Gripping Historical Romance

Cassidy Ivanoff and her father, John, work at the new and prestigious Curry Hotel outside Mt. McKinley. While John will be expedition and wilderness exploration guide for the wealthy tourists, Cassidy has signed on as a cook's assistant. Both are busy as the hotel prepares to welcome the president of the United States on his way to drive in the golden spike to officially complete the railroad.

Allan Brennan travels to the Curry Hotel to be an apprentice of a seasoned Alaska mountain guide. Ever since his father's death climbing Mt. McKinley, he's worked to earn enough money to make the trek to the Alaska territory himself. His father's partner blames their guide for the death of his father, but Allan wants to find the truth for himself. He finds an unlikely ally in Cassidy, and as the two begin to look into the mystery, they suddenly find that things are much less clear, and much more dangerous, than either could ever imagine.

This review was written for #1: In the Shadow of Denali.
Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse return once again to the vast expanse that would become the 49th state. The magic word 'Alaska' was really all it took for me to take an interest In The Shadow Of Denali. I've read books from the authors individually but this is the first one that they co-authored.

I had a hard time connecting with the main characters at times, finding them both to be quite naive. But I did appreciate Allan's journey to forgiveness, a struggle, which for a myriad of reasons, many of us are familiar with. For me at least, the real stars of the book were the Curry Hotel and Denali 'The Great One'. Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse brought them both life with such vivid descriptions it was almost like being there.

In The Shadow Of Denali is a sweet romance with some dashes of danger from a nasty villain and especially the capricious Alaskan weather. Fans of both authors will enjoy this trip to Alaska of the 1920s.

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

I am a fan of Tracie Peterson, and she did not disappoint with this beginning book in the "The Heart of Alaska" series. It was a good mix of romance, mystery, adventure, action, danger, and history. The authors do an excellent job of taking the reader on a vivid trip to the early 1900s in the wide open expanses of Alaska. It is the story of heroine Cassidy Ivanoff as she faces an uncertain future that hinges on solving mysteries of the past. Ivanoff crosses paths with Allan Brennan who arrives for work at the Curry Hotel where Ivanoff and her father work. Brennan is plagued by questions surrounding the suspicious death of his father. The story unravels this mystery while weaving the relationships of everyone at the hotel together to arrive at the book's climatic ending. I especially enjoyed the interactions of Ivanoff with her boss, Mrs. Johnson. Ivanoff draws on her relationship with God to try to help her through secrets in her past as well. This is good story of how letting go of bitterness from past can unlock the key to happiness in the future.

I received this book for free from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. I was not obligated to write a positive review.

Great read and enjoyed the history and the characters in the story. Alaska is very interesting and that time in history is intriguing to study. I like a good christian base story with historical facts.

First of all.... what an appealing cover. I love the mix of eras present in the art. A little history and a little present day - it blends into a beautiful piece that really is an accurate portrayal of the story itself.

Allan Brennan travels to Alaska nearly a decade after his father's untimely death on the unforgiving slopes of Mount Denali. Although a fair amount of time has passed he is no where near over his father's death and he has questions. Lots of them. Most importantly, he has questions for his father's mountain guide, John Ivanoff. Determined to hear exactly what happened that faitfull day, Allan finds a job at the Curry Hotel as an apprenticing mountain guide. Unknown to him, his boss is none other than John Ivanoff.

Confused and angry, Allan tries to sort out the facts. The incompetent man he was told about by his father's business partner does not at all match the outstanding individual he is reluctantly getting to know. As time passes, instead of finding answers to his father's demise, Allan's questions grow. As Allan and John's daughter Cassidy begin to dig deeper they unknowingly stir up a danger that is very much alive, but will they realize what they've done before it's too late?

This was a very well researched novel and you can tell that both authors have a deep love and appreciation for the history and the beauty of Alaska. The descriptions and the reverence within these pages for the USA's most northern state is clear. In addition to being a great tribute to Alaska, this novel is a wonderful faith promoter. Neither Tracie Peterson or Kimberley Woodhouse shy away from sharing the gospel nor do they miss an opportunity to teach a faith lesson. This is a very nice novel with solid characters, a sweet romance, and an interesting plot.

Thank-you to Graf Martin Communications and Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

Cassidy Ivanoff has lived in Alaska her entire life, her father John, an highly esteemed guide among the vast mountainous regions, having led expeditions up the infamous Mount McKinley, affectionately known to native Alaskans as Denali. After the tragic loss of one of his hikers, John and Cassidy have accepted employment at the prestigious Curry Hotel, strategically nestled along the emerging Alaska Railroad. When Henry Brennan's son, Allan, arrives in Curry to seek answers about his father's unfortunate demise, the dark shadows surrounding that fateful day struggle to meet the light of truth.

Allan Brennan cannot help but be impressed with the patient, highly skilled Curry Hotel exploration guide, John Brennan. His lovely daughter Cassidy also makes a good first impression, even cautiously agreeing to forge a friendship with Allan in spite of his surly attitude towards her father. As the three tiptoe towards mutual forgiveness, Allan receives news about his father's former business partner that is quite disturbing, leading him to wonder what really happened on the peaks of Denali.

Comfortably paced and resplendent with American history, "In the Shadow of Denali" is a good story with deep inspirational impact, reminding how past regrets and unspoken dreams can be intertwined and then set free.
