Product Description

Abigail Foster fears she will end up a spinster, especially as she has little dowry to improve her charms and the one man she thought might marry her--a longtime friend--has fallen for her younger, prettier sister.

When financial problems force her family to sell their London home, a strange solicitor arrives with an astounding offer: the use of a distant manor house abandoned for eighteen years. The Fosters journey to imposing Pembrooke Park and are startled to find it entombed as it was abruptly left: tea cups encrusted with dry tea, moth-eaten clothes in wardrobes, a doll's house left mid-play . . .

Abigail Foster is the practical daughter. She fears she will end up a spinster, especially as she has little dowry, and the one man she thought might marry her seems to have fallen for her younger, prettier sister.

Facing financial ruin, Abigail and her father search for more affordable lodgings, until a strange solicitor arrives with an astounding offer: the use of a distant manor house abandoned for eighteen years. The Fosters journey to imposing Pembrooke Park and are startled to find it entombed as it was abruptly left: tea cups encrusted with dry tea, moth-eaten clothes in wardrobes, a doll's house left mid-play...

The handsome local curate welcomes them, but though he and his family seem acquainted with the manor's past, the only information they offer is a stern warning: Beware trespassers drawn by rumors that Pembrooke Park contains a secret room filled with treasure.

This catches Abigail's attention. Hoping to restore her family's finances--and her dowry--Abigail looks for this supposed treasure. But eerie sounds at night and footprints in the dust reveal she isn't the only one secretly searching the house.

Then Abigail begins receiving anonymous letters, containing clues about the hidden room and startling discoveries about the past.

As old friends and new foes come calling at Pembrooke Park, secrets come to light. Will Abigail find the treasure and love she seeks...or very real danger?

An intricately woven mystery set in the beautiful Regency era.

I'm a bit behind on Ms. Klassen's books, as this title was released in 2014, however I shall enjoy every second of catching up! When I saw this beauty on the shelf at my local library I unashamedly snatched it off the shelf, determined that this book would be coming home with me.

I don't know about you but I just love this time period. It's reminiscent of the early seasons of Downton Abbey, with butlers and housemaids and footmen. This era also possesses a charm like that found in Pride and Prejudice. It is for this reason that I eat up Ms. Klassen's works (though, not literally). The stories and characters are so masterfully crafted and put together, The Secret of Pembrooke Park being no exception to this.

In this novel we meet the Foster family, who have come upon hard times. Out of the blue, they are offered a tenancy at an abandoned house. They accept. Abigail and her father move there directly to tidy up the place while her mother and sister remain in London for the season. As they clean, Abigail detects something strange about the place and seeks to uncover the mystery.

While this isn't my favorite novel, I will say I do love a good mystery. This story offers a relaxing mystery--it is by no means a thriller--to enjoy while you lounge on your couch or bed. Once you've started reading, it quickly becomes harder and harder to put down. Ms. Klassen pens her stories in such a way that you find yourself glued to the book, easily able to imagine everything happening in your mind's eye. This is a trait I really value in books. I want to be able to see it. Anyway, I generally pride myself in solving mysteries fairly quickly, so I applaud Ms. Klassen because she gave me a run for my money!

If Regency style is your thing, or you like Austen's novels, I can easily recommend this novel to you. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I checked out this book at my local library, no review required.

I have read every book by Klassen. So far, I have enjoyed her style and subject. Pembrook surprised me, however. It was a story so overwhelming with mysteries that I lost track of it all. I kept on reading just as I did ages ago with Agatha Christie's books - to find out who's done it. The romantic scenes in the book were decent, even cute, although somewhat hard to believe sometimes (a proper lady out on her own at night soaking her toes in a stream?). As to Christian inspiration, that was minimum, almost hard to spot.

To me, Pembrook is a clean and entertaining mystery story, but not valuable enough to add to my library.

I did not want to put this book down because I wanted to know all the secrets of this house and family. Once she has to move to this house in the country she needs to know if she can find love or just the treasure of Pembroke Park. I loved Abigail and William. There are many twists and turns in this story. When you think you know one secret there turns up more. I received this book from book fun.org for a fair and honest opinion.

Julie Klassen has masterfully woven a tale of treasure, intrigue and romance to turn the heads of any fans of Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters. With a mysterious character or two, a lost heiress and a secret room rumored to house a great treasure it is no wonder I could not put this book down until I had turned the very last page.

Abigale Foster has struggled to find her place amongst her family ever since she gave her father a misguided but well-meant piece of financial advice that left them close to broke. She has desperately been trying to make amends since then, going so far as to give up her dowry so her younger, prettier sister might still have her own season. Devastated after her childhood friend, whom she had thought to marry, turns his attentions to her sister, she is desperate for escape. When her family is mysteriously offered an old country estate at a price that is too affordable to turn down, she offers to go ahead to prepare their new home. However, all is not as seems in this mysterious old house with rumors of a lost treasure and missing heiress lurking like shadows.

Julie Klassen knows how to write a mystery, let me tell you! Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another twist comes to shake things up. The way the mystery played out was very satisfying and the truth about the treasure seemed believable.

There characters were all very well written and, for the most part, likeable. I really did not care for Abigales family or Clive, but these were minor characters that were not around too much. The romance was quieter than usual and I very much enjoyed that.

Overall this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to all regency fans. As always, I eagerly await Julie Klassens next novel.

This book is so full of twists and turns I could have been on a roller coaster. Julie Klassen is an excellent author. She had me digging for clues and trying to figure out who people really are. Klassen did an amazing job at making the story full of excitement, and then answering every question that was raised throughout the story. I really enjoy a book where you feel completely satisfied and not like you are missing something. Secret of Pembrooke Park took me to another place and time where true gentleman still existed, just not always where you expected. I love reading about different times where there were different stations in life, but love overcomes all.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
