Savings in Seconds4 Stars Out Of 5Interesting history!May 31, 2017Savings in SecondsQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I was excited to receive this book from Tyndale, so I started reading it the day it arrived! The story-within-a-story captivated my attention. It was so interesting to learn about the historic journaling of America's stories. I'd never heard of that project before, although I live in the area that was mentioned several times in the story. There is actually a Melungeon festival here! Though the story was interesting, it dragged on in parts. Additionally, I felt like the ending was rushed. I needed more closure (and a longer epilogue!!) I'm hoping there will be another book. I had no idea this was part of a series, so now I plan to read the others as well. This book was given to me by Tyndale, and these are my honest opinions.

Wingate, the author of The Story Keeperanother wonderful taleis an acclaimed writer. I whole-heartedly agree that she is a masterful writer.
The story begins when Whitney Monroe, a struggling restaurant owner, is summoned to her late mothers home in North Carolinas Outer Banks to assist her estranged stepfather. He resides on the third floor in an historic building, a former hotel, and the tenants on the bottom level call her after he has fallen and been hospitalized. His own family does not assume responsibility for him. Originally, she thinks that the sale of this building might help to relieve her financial problems and save her second restaurant from ruin. She feels responsible for her cousin and other employees welfare and thinks that this would resolve all of their problems.
As she sorts through family heirlooms to sell or keep, she discovers a unique necklace among the jewelry and a treasure trove of old letters from her grandmothers sister to her grandmother. These reveal the broken bond between thema perplexing mysterythat leads to answers to Whitneys own questions about her family and heritage. The letters reveal fascinating information about the Federal Writers Project during the Great Depression. Her great aunt had traveled and worked for the project.
This is a wonderfully captivating story with many layers. The reader gleans much historical background and pertinent information about the time period besides becoming involved in Whitneys struggles in life and love. This is another great work that I highly recommend. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5entertainingApril 30, 2016lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Seakeepers Daughter is a finely tuned tale that mixes mystery, history, faith and mankinds propensity for prejudice. The story flashback takes readers into the stock market crash impact upon family members and those who chose a way to deal with the hopelessness they felt deeply. There is also a woman, Whitney Moore, who owns a restaurant in Michigan. She travels south to care for her stepfather, who is at odds with her and begins deciding what to do with her grandmothers inheritance.
While that sounds easy to make decisions about stuff, it is in going through all that is left behind and uncovering a secret long buried. Additionally, Whitney has issues in Michigan regarding her restaurants and feels pushed to sell the land along with an ancient hotel by a man who cares nothing for preserving historic sites.
Lisa Wingate has crafted a very compelling story of humanity that reveals both the good and the evil that people can do to others by accident or on purpose. Whitney is also dealing with her own insecurities since her father committed suicide. However, her character isnt the only one who makes decisions based on experiences as audiences will soon discover.
Frankly, I was immersed in the book for hours as the further I went into the story the more my heart was touched. Learning about the Depressions far-reaching affects into how people viewed others if they werent Caucasian and some viewed those as taking jobs away from white people. Such an eye-opening tale based on the stories and pictures that show us much and in a way shames us too.
Then, the final theme of legacy not just the material objects but more importantly being honest about family bloodlines, faith and revealing what is most important of all which is mankind. How will we be remembered for how we have treated others or not taken care of other people? I hope and pray the legacy I leave behind is one of faith and one which values people more than things!
PatsdreamHuntsville, ALAge: Over 65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Clean Romance with touch of suspenseApril 18, 2016PatsdreamHuntsville, ALAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 0Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Whitney owns a restaurant and a hostile takeover is being planned. She inherits an old hotel on the banks of North Carolina. When she arrives her estranged step-father is in residence on the third floor. There are tenants downstairs with their own shops and a second floor that hasn't been touched in awhile. She goes through the things in the attic and the second floor hoping to find some heirlooms that will pay off her mortgage and save her restaurant and the hotel. Her tenants don't want to lose their businesses and try every way to keep her from selling.
There is romance, humor, faith and if anything can go wrong then Whitney finds it. Trouble that is. Lisa Wingate keeps you interested in the different characters throughout the book. You will grow to love the tenants. You will be drawn into the story as Whitney and her step-father try to forgive each other and have a better relationship.
I received this book through Book Fun Network to read and leave honest reviews. Lisa Wingate is a masterful story teller and she brings God and faith in the storyline without being preachy. Her characters are delightful and I always enjoy a book that has a touch of humor.
