I could hardly put this book down. It was fun, exciting, and mysterious. It was filled with growing love, family devotion, tragedy, and positive relationships with Christ.

It begins in Colden, Massachusetts in 1879, where most of the story takes place. It also weaves in a family fleeing Romania, who have thick Romanian accents. Those were fun to read, since I tend to hear accents in my head.

Libby Sawyer has a disability which causes her to be very compassionate towards others. She is supposedly the main character, although I felt Mikhail was equally well developed. She is 28 and lives with her elderly father, an inventor. She is a wonderful artist, who captures botany in great and amazing detail despite her difficulty. Her father, however, only recognizes and rather uses her, for her ability to draw his inventions with superb clarity. She has a motherly connection to all children, because she so longs to have her own, but believes she never can. She "exists" in the town, but is not valued for her kindness and talents.

Mikhail/Michael has fled Romania and is very "black and white" in his ways of thinking, but he has deep devotion and commitment. At heart, he is a good man. His differences speak to his cultural upbringing. It is a good reminder for us to consider as we encounter other cultures. As he and his mismatched family struggle to fit in to the American ways and ideas of life, we can imagine what it must be like to do so. By mismatched, I am referring to his two rowdy, but sweet boys, his two hulking comrades, and his frail sister. Each will come to reveal great strength and resolve and are very interesting.

There is deep sadness in some of the characters background stories, but how they overcome them and seek to glorify God is wonderful to read. For anyone who struggles with great tragedy, or disability this book shows positive examples of how to prevail. I enjoyed how well many of the supporting characters were developed. It really added depth to the book.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars, and look forward to other books by Elizabeth Camden.

Another wonderful story from Elizabeth Camden! She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Michael Dobrescu brought his family from Romania to the United States to start a new life in the house his uncle left to him in his will. A house now lived in by Professor Sawyer his daughter Libby. Both men claim ownership.

Libby finds herself attracted to the handsome Romanian in spite of the animosity between him and her father. And his two young sons capture her heart from the start. But love is out of the question for Libby Sawyer, even with a foreigner who doesn't know her shameful secret.

Love the characters in this story. I was drawn to them immediately and had to keep the pages turning to see what would happen next. I highly recommend this one!

What do you do when opposing sides of an issue are both in the right?

What do you do when neither side does what is right?

From the cover to the end of the story, Elizabeth Camden's "The Rose of Winslow Street" is a gorgeous novel, and not a run-of-the-mill romance. Liberty Sawyer and her professor father are called back from vacation upon a "horde of gypsies" taking over their house. Displaced from their home, they fight to get back the house that they have lived in for more than twenty years, while Romanians Michael Dobrescu and his family fights to hold onto the house which they inherited from the previous owner. The town is behind the Sawyers, but the law is forced to uphold the Dobrescus.

It is a book full of contradictions. A strapping, warrior of a man, Michael has spent much of his life fighting in the wars against one oppressor or another, but his passion is raising flowers and making perfumes. Mirela, a duke's daughter, is wearing secondhand dresses, while the wife of a middle class banker is sporting expensive jewels and suddenly seems to own a fortune. An inventor never completes an invention to his satisfaction, and thus never patents a one, and Libby, the daughter of a professor, cannot even read.

Despite the fact that they are officially enemies and in defiance of the hardness of the hearts of the "good christian people" of Colden, Massachusetts, Libby reaches out to the ostracized Dobrescus, forging a close friendship with Michael and a love for his sons. They still remain opposed as to who should have the house - after all, Libby was raised there and her father put years of work into it, and Michael inherited it from his uncle and it is the only safe haven for him and his family - but in spite of that, they respect each other's opinion and do not let it seriously interfere with their relationship.

I never could decide which party should have the house, since both are in the right, but both sides do ample wrong. It is certainly wrong of Michael to just waltz in and take the house by force, and he does not improve matters by destroying all the local roses, but neither is it right to deny a family - especially one with young children - such basic necessities as food! No one else makes an effort to know the Dobrescus, and yet they are perfectly happy to trash-talk them and boot them out in a storm.

Overall, I was impressed by the novelty of this book, as the plot is quite different from many historical romances. Largely it is a romance, but with a wee bit of suspense, a wee bit of mystery, and superbly vibrant characters that one can hurt for, hope for, pity, despise, and love. 5 out of 5 stars!

I bought this book because the I really liked the two other books I'd read by Elizabeth Camden. The content of the book was not what I expected, but the satisfaction when I finished matched that of the other books I'd read by Camden. I don't wish to say anything about what happens in the book because I would hate to spoil it for someone, but this is a good book, and if you like Camden, I think you'll like Rose of Winslow Street as well.

If you enjoy a good romance, that is a little different, and set in the 19th century, you will love this book. The story was unusual, the characters memorable, and I just couldn't put it down!
