If you have been around the Christian world for very long, you have most likely heard of Jim Cymbala as well as the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. And you may know of some of Jim's previous best seller - Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire. You may also recognize the name Ann Spangler (co-author of The Rescue). When I think of Ann, I immediately think of the Names of God (look her up - I have learned so much about God's Names from her work!). Basically, I was more than happy to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The thing I loved most about The Rescue was the fact that it is both an encouragement to believers that the Lord is still working and moving in the lives of people all around us who seem to be living such train-wrecked lives & that a seeking person could easily pick this book up and meet Jesus personally in any one of the amazing stories shared here.

    That's powerful stuff.

And that's why I think this would make a great book to buy, read, and then pass on to someone....then they could pass it along, and so on. The gift that keeps on giving - way, way better than the jelly-of-the-month club, right?!?

In all seriousness, if you are even the slightest bit uncomfortable sharing the Good News about Jesus's rescuing power with someone, could you buy a copy of The Rescue and share it with that person? Is that an option to get a conversation started?

I am thankful Jim Cymbala and Ann Spangler wrote this book - we all need a fresh reminder that the fire of Jesus still changes lives every single day.

    Seven people, Seven amazing stories...

Christian leaders often suggest reading biographies and/or autobiographies. Normally the suggestion refers to reading about prominent people. I prefer reading about conversions. In the past I have written several book reviews about people who have converted from a particular religion to Christianity. The Rescue is different.

Written in the first person The Rescue tells seven stories about seven people. Each person has a similar story with a different experience. The reading experience brings on a flood of emotions, emotions such as anger, sadness, hope, and compassion. The Rescue reminds us how broken our world is, how broken we are. We are reminded of sin's effect on ourselves and others, but that's only part of the stories. Through the testimonies of these seven we are reminded of the unconditional love and grace of God. No one is beyond the reach of God's grace. Grace is available to all and it is found in the gift of God's Son Jesus Christ.

We all indulge in sin for different reasons, but we all start out the same. We are all blinded by the god of this world. Rather than looking at others with judgment we can try to understand what others go through. Read the rescue. Read about seven broken people who represent the world. Read about the amazing grace of God; read about His forbearance and longsuffering as he mends broken hearts, restores the broken, and delivers sinners from their sin. And don't forget that He has provided healing for all, including you.

In exchange for an honest review I have received a copy of The Rescue (Handlebar Direction For Publishing). I have written an honest review.

The Rescue by Jim Cymbala is a true testament to the Miracle-working, saving-grace of an Almighty God. If you have ever felt that you were alone, not loved, unwanted, near death, contemplating suicide, battling depression - read these stories from these individuals who experienced first-hand, the deliverance of the Lord. Hopefully though their experiences, you will see how God moved mightily on their behalf. Even when they thought they didn't have any faith or hope, God stepped right in and touched their situation.

As I read the stories you couldn't help but feel for each and every person, I was moved to tears as I read some of the stories. I will say this, in all of the stories and even though everyone in the book faced impossible circumstances, fought for their lives and the lives of others - God was still there!

    The Rescue

By Jim Cymbala, Contributor Ann Spangler

Seven different, people, seven different messed up lives, and one loving God. Anyone looking from the outside would say they have no chance of ever changing but thank goodness God doesnt look on the outside! It might also appear that their situations were so dire and far gone that they had no hope. But with God all things are possible! To society these people would seem to be broken beyond repair but enter the Lord and His miraculous healing and love.

I have read inspirational stories about God redeeming people deep in, but I found this one to be a bit different. The people tell their own stories in a very detailed and personal way. I could feel their despair and misery through their words. I also felt their amazement and joy when they met the Lord and he changed their lives forever. Some of them were victims of the wrongs of others, and some put themselves where they were at by their own choices.

I was reminded of the quote by R. Zaccharias Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. The stories brought to light how a transgression will multiply into many as time goes on, and continues to grow worse until one surrenders to Gods intervention. I was blessed at reading the many different ways the Lord reached out and spoke to each person. It shows what a personal God He is. There is no cookie cutter pattern for God to touch a life. Thank goodness! They did not even know they needed Him, but He came to them and met them where they were at. No matter how far the individuals had fallen, when they accepted Christ the changes were permanent. How wonderful to read about their lives before Christ and after. I was amazed.

One the biggest ways this book spoke to me was that although my problems may not be of the same magnitude, He will do miraculous things for me too! His power is limitless in all areas! I knew this already but the book brought it home even closerThis book was so encouraging and hope filled! What testimonies of Gods love and power today!

I received this book from Chosen Books in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.
