There are seven true stories about people who have dramatically come to Jesus when they were at the end of their ropes. These people include a flight attendant, a homeless man, a drug runner, a teenage mom, and more. They come from various backgrounds, but have the same basic story: they were lost but are now found.
The stories in The Rescue are short enough to read in one sitting but they really do pack a punch. They begin in despair and end in triumph. They show the reader that there is hope, always hope.
I can't end this review without mentioning that all of the stories end well because the people who lived them gave themselves over completely to Jesus Christ, not because they did anything else that the world might say they should. The common thread running throughout the stories is that God worked in ways that they did not understand and through many people to bring about their trust in Him. It's what it's all about.
The~Wiser~Way4 Stars Out Of 5The Rescue is an inspirational book that is definitely worth your time to check out!April 9, 2018The~Wiser~WayQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4The Rescue by Jim Cymbala with Ann Spangler is an inspirational book that is certainly worth your time and money. It is a quick read, but is packed with some extremely powerful stories of people going through immeasurable hardships. Each individual account reveals a season of difficulties and trials in their life. Each chapter is a new story and is narrated by the person in much the same way as an autobiography. (I liked this type of presentation, as it gave a depth of authenticity that would not have been there otherwise.)
The beauty of each chapter is revealed in the end, as the reader discovers that the answer to each of their circumstances is the rescuing power of Jesus Christ. Some of the stories within the book are very difficult to read. They're perspectives are full of such darkness that frankly, I had to put it down and take a break occasionally, because the depth of despair is a bit overwhelming. Pushing through to see how Christ brings His redemptive love to the dilemma is the reward, however, and is undeniably worth it!
Thank you to Zondervan & Handlebar Publishing for this review copy of The Rescue. The opinions within this review are my own. I was not required to write a positive review, only to provide an honest assessment of this work.

(Two people are listed together because their stories intertwine.) They are all friends of pastor Jim Cymbala of Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York City, and each one carries with them a unique and seemingly futile life story...at the beginning. Through their willingness to be raw and vulnerable, they share their stories one at a time and show that their stories don't end the way they began. With each story, you'll see in a real, fleshed-out way how God reached into people's lives and makes beauty out of ashes, hope out of hopelessness.
This book has an introduction and a wrap-up chapter that ties the meanings of each of these stories together, but what I do like about this book is that the stories aren't 100% wrapped up, perfect story endings. These are real people, like you and me, whose stories are still being written. Giving their lives to Christ was the catalyst that set them all on a new and hopeful path, but not every story over. The way each story ends makes them more believable and relatable, since none of our stories are ever perfectly sorted out and made perfect the instant we become Christ followers. There's still life to live, there's still forgiveness to seek and hand out, and there's still some consequences for past decisions. BUT overall, the theme rings true and is woven throughout each life here -- that God can take a mess and create a masterpiece. A WORKING masterpiece....one that's constantly evolving and changing and being purified.
Jim Cymbala poses the idea that he wishes he could be sharing these stories with the reader over a cup of coffee in a living room instead of broadcasting them from printed pages, but in a way, I feel as if he somehow is. These stories feel open and honest in a very down-home way, and they are stories that stick with you long after you shut the book cover.

The testimonies of these individuals and how God rescued them is absolutely amazing and miraculous. It gives a person hope. I'm sure there were some people who probably thought that the individuals in this book were beyond God's reach. But, they weren't. If God can save them, He can save anyone.
