Abraham Heschel is a seminal name in religious studies and the author of Man Is Not Alone and God in Search of Man. When The Prophets was first published in 1962, it was immediately recognized as a masterpiece of biblical scholarship.
The Prophets provides a unique opportunity for readers of the Old Testament, both Christian and Jewish, to gain fresh and deep knowledge of Israel's prophetic movement. The author's profound understanding of the prophets also opens the door to new insight into the philosophy of religion.
Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972), born in Poland, moved to the United States in 1940. A professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Heschel became an active and well-known participant in the Civil Rights movement and the protests against the Vietnam War.
Ed Marr5 Stars Out Of 5November 13, 2005Ed MarrAs an author myself, I so much appreciate substantive works which transcend the traditional perspective. This book does that for me. Having read this book through just one time and then reading the prophetic books of the Bible, my mind is alert to the prophet's consciousness and the pathos of God, which heretofore had been overlooked by me. I recommend this book strongly to any and all serious minded people of God whose hearts desire is to become grounded and built upon the foundation of the Prophets and the Apostles (Ephesians 2:19-22)beyond the traditional point of view.
Charlie Perkins5 Stars Out Of 5October 2, 2001Charlie PerkinsNo one can ever claim familiarity with the prophets until this book, in particular, and this wonderful author, in general, are made part of your life. I am not Jewish, but the depth and wealth of their tradition and vision are indispensable to the study of our Christian faith.
