Ill start by saying that I did not finish this book. I tried to, but I could not force myself to waste anymore time finishing The Princess Within. This book is written for teens I am 21 years old and felt like I was close enough to the age range to really give this book a review from the perspective of a younger girl.

The book jumps from topic to topic without much cohesion or flow-through. I think this book could be more helpful to some people but it definitely wasn't written for a more sheltered girl. I believe Serina Ann James wrote this book for teens who have messed up relationships and boyfriends.

Let me admit something. I put off reviewing this book because I rarely enjoyed anything marketed specifically to Teen Girls.

So many books for teen females were shallow. They paid lip-service to a few select Bible verses and used anecdotes of high-school drama that I couldn't relate to. After a while, I gave up on almost all Young Adult books.

So a month ago I received Serita Ann Jakes' book *The Princess Within* and I thought I knew what to expect.

I was very surprised. Yes, this book has a tiara and sparkly pink tennis shoes on the front.

Yes, it addresses popularity, the dating game, and social media.

And yes, it is worth the read.

Why am I so glad that I have a copy of this book?

Because Mrs. Jakes writes in a way that makes sense to a girl's heart.

She dispenses wisdom without sounding preaching, she reveals bits about her own faith journey as a young woman, she includes a lot of stories from modern young girls, and there is a ton of Scripture in here.

And not just the nice, soft verses that we put on inspirational desk-calendars. Nope.

Mrs. Jakes takes girls to verses like Isaiah 53.

She introduces us to the women of the Gospels, the women with the issue of blood and the woman caught in adultery. She helps the beautiful, time tested words of Scripture make sense in real life, and she shows how human needs and the character of God are still the same.

I think that girls will be drawn in by the straight-talk about their world. Mrs. Jakes starts with the relatable (a party we're not invited to, money spent on beauty products) and moves to the serious (a God who holds our hurting hearts and the pain caused by our body image culture.)

She takes the discussion and moves it right to God- what does he say, how much does He care, and what does that mean for the way we live?

Whether it's a fun quiz about clothes and friends and parents or a heart-to-heart about living fearlessly in a violent world, this book belongs in many girl's backpacks and on their bedside tables.

Thank you Bethany House for my review copy.

When I was in my teens, my best friend Mindy had a subscription to 'Seventeen' magazine. As soon as they arrived each month, we would devour them. One regular piece in the magazine was always the first to be read; the quiz. Are you a flirt? Are you a good friend? Is he into you? The quizzes never failed to entertain us. One month there was a bonus quiz section! So great!

While reading "The Princess Within" by Serita Ann Jakes, I tried really hard to put myself in the shoes of the intended audience. The first thing about this book that caught my inner 14 year old was the quiz every other chapter. (I think I would have liked this book.)There is also a snippet of an ongoing real-life style fairytale as well as some bible teaching and practical application.

The teaching by Mrs. Jakes is sound and practical. Some of the issues she mentions are upsetting but, then again, so is life. A couple of times I had a slight knee jerk reaction to the content. Upon pausing to think, "Is this appropriate for teens?" I always came back with a yes. To think that my teen doesn't know about body issues, rape or cutting would be ridiculous. It's better to meet the issue head on than act like an ostrich.

The big question, after making sure that the teaching is sound, is to ask, "Yeah, but will my teen read it?" I suppose I can't really answer that since I'm not your teen. But, while this is a book, is has a magazine feel to it in that the chapters are short and the teaching parts are interspersed among life stories and fictional bits. Right now my daughter is only 11 but I will definitely be keeping this book for when she's a few years older. It's a book many young gals would benefit from reading.

BTW, I got a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was written for teenage girls to help them cope with different dilemmas they might face in today's world. She especially focuses on a girl's self-esteem, and temptations that could be real pitfalls in a girl's life. At the beginning of each chapter, portions of the story of Cinderella are used to set the theme for the point being discussed. There are also some song recommendations for the reader to listen to that go along with the subject line. A section called, "My Story," is included that has a true account from someone who has experienced this issue. The author combines all of this with the word of God and speaks about each subject with candor, knowledge and good ideas.

The author is very up-to-date with current trends and topics that face today's teenage girls--including some really dangerous situations that exist. The book is interesting, and would not be difficult for a teenager to read. She really makes the reader think by including surveys, often asking the audience questions and querying "what's your story" in different situations. Mrs. Jakes gives really good advice about what not to do, but also, what to do if a teenager messes up. The author assures the girls that it is never too late to turn their lives around, and that if they include God in their lives, so much the better. God will never turn His back on them, no matter what they have done or experienced.

This book was uplifting, and really wants to get teenage girls to make the right choices, have good self-esteem and include Jesus in their lives. Mrs. Jakes doesn't shy away from hard topics. I recommend this 5-star book to teenagers or their parents. The author has five adult children, as well as grandchildren. She is also the wife of Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potter's House in Dallas, Texas.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through Bethany House Publishing for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I have not been compensated in any other manner. Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment, and I have given an honest opinion.
