This one was a reread for me, and I have to say that it was just as good my second time through.

Steven James is one of the most talented storytellers Ive ever encountered within the pages of a book. In-depth characters, twisty plots, complex storytelling.. all of these are major qualities in Steven James writing. Its so so good. He knows how to truly captivate his readers and relate to them. Even as he writes about an FBI detective tracking serial killers.

The Pawn is the fast-paced story of Patrick Bowers as he sets out to catch a bad guy.. a really bad guy who thinks of the graphic murders hes so intricately linked together as a game. Between all the dead ends Patrick faces with the case and the brick walls he finds himself up against with his teenage stepdaughter, he begins to realize that maybe he doesnt quite have life figured out as well as hed once thought.

This book is like a bag of barbecue potato chips. Quite addictive. Much like you find yourself reaching for another chip again and again, this tale and its intensity keep you turning page after page.

    * Although the first published Patrick Bowers novel, I highly recommend reading the prequels prior to this so you get the big picture and the full effect of the mystery. I didnt have that luxury since I read this one way before the prequels existed, but this time around Im enjoying the opportunity to read them chronologically.

The Pawn, was a great read and wild ride. Author Steven James does a great job keeping the reader guessing at each step of the way. Whenever you think you have something figured out, another layer to the character and plot is revealed.

James is very persistent in his writing, and creates a realistic and intriguing plot thatll keep you flipping pages.

The book deals with mature themes and might be best for teenagers and older.

However, if you like thrillers and mysteries, this one is for you.

This is one of the most engaging books I have read. The author draws you in and doesn't let you go. Because I am from Wisconsin, Patrick Bower's adventures have particular relevance. It is also a joy to be able to read a suspenseful book without having to worry about foul language. I think Steven James can take his place with the best crime authors of all time!

I thought that because it was bought at a Christian bookstore online that it would be a lot more "spiritual" and Biblically based. Too much graphic-ness!!! It was almost tossed in the trash.

Overall this was a good read. I did find it too graphic at times. I found myself wanting more of an emphasis on Biblical issues. I almost put it aside a few times and didn't plan to finish it, but I did finish.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Steven James
Submitted: November 27, 2012

Tell us a little about yourself.  I’ve written over twenty nonfiction books, but this is my first novel. I’ve wanted to write novels for a long time and have toyed with ideas for years, so it was a blessing to be able to finally craft one.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to examine, within the framework of an intense psychological thriller, the question of what makes us (specifically, me) different from those who do the unthinkable. Serial killers are just as human as I am; they’re not some kind of monsters, and yet they act in monstrous ways. Am I capable of that as well? That’s the question that drove the narrative.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I don’t write so much with an agenda in mind, that is, that I’m hoping readers will learn a lesson, as much as I am hoping they’ll examine and explore moral issues. But I would say that, in addition to being entertained, I hope readers will gain new insights into the fallen nature of man and of the need all of us have of a Savior.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  For this book I needed to do a lot of research on cults. When I saw the power of brainwashing, I was reminded once again of how powerful ideas are and how easily we can be deceived and led astray by them. Scripture warns against being deceived by the hollow philosophies of this age. It’s easy for all of us, me included, to get deceived. It’s not easy to admit that, but when we do we open ourselves up to grow more in the knowledge of the truth.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I remember reading Sigmund Brouwer’s novel Blood Ties and being struck by how groundbreaking it was in the Christian book market. It gave me confidence that my books would find an audience here as well.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Since The Pawn contains some graphic and violent scenes, some people have asked me if this book is a Christian novel. I would say that it is not by any means unchristian. If you like gripping psychological suspense without sex and foul language and written from a Christian worldview, you’ll enjoy this book.
