Publisher's Description

One of Booklist’s Top 10 Inspirational Fiction for 2017
Living in rural Georgia in 1941, sixteen-year-old Alice-Ann has her heart set on her brother’s friend Mack; despite their five-year age gap, Alice-Ann knows she can make Mack see her for the woman she’ll become. But when they receive news of the attack on Pearl Harbor and Mack decides to enlist, Alice-Ann realizes she must declare her love before he leaves.

Though promising to write, Mack leaves without confirmation that her love is returned. But Alice-Ann is determined to wear the wedding dress her maiden aunt never had a chance to wear—having lost her fiancé in the Great War. As their correspondence continues over the next three years, Mack and Alice-Ann are drawn closer together. But then Mack’s letters cease altogether, leaving Alice-Ann to fear history repeating itself.

Dreading the war will leave her with a beautiful dress and no happily ever after, Alice-Ann fills her days with work and caring for her best friend’s war-torn brother, Carlton. As time passes and their friendship develops into something more, Alice-Ann wonders if she’ll ever be prepared to say good-bye to her one true love and embrace the future God has in store with a newfound love. Or will a sudden call from overseas change everything?

Editorial Reviews

Everson (Five Brides, 2015) tells a classic 1940s coming-of-age war love story complete with soda shops, five-and-dimes, rationing, and German POWs. She brilliantly captures life in small-town America and the men who went to war, those who came back, and the women they left behind. Rich with prayer and Christian faith, Alice-Ann’s characters are portrayed with soul-satisfying emotional vulnerability as they hit all the high notes of the aching of youth, the shock of loss, and the gentle surprise of falling in love again.
Living in non-glamorous, small-town Georgia in the 1940s does nothing to satisfy 16-year-old Alice-Ann’s longing for beauty and maturity. She wants to be seen as a woman and is in love with her brother’s best friend, Mack; she plans on confessing her love to him. But when Pearl Harbor is attacked, the build-up of war stuns the town and puts her plans on hold. Mack enlists and promises to write, but never broaches the subject of his feelings for Alice-Ann, leaving her to wonder whether her love is returned. She savors his letters, and when news of his death reaches her, she struggles to let go of her childhood love. When her best friend’s brother, Carlton Hillis, returns from the war badly injured, Alice-Ann becomes his caregiver, never expecting to care more deeply for him. As Mack’s place in her heart slowly fades, or transforms, she receives an unexpected call from the Pacific that shakes her world and forces her to make a choice. Everson (Five Brides) beautifully captures the fickle, inexplicable nature of human emotion in this sob-inducing romantic tale.

When you find an author you like, you anticipate their next book. I fell in love with Eva Marie Everson's books and was thrilled to get this book to review. This story proved to be another winner in my book.

The setting is rural Georgia in 1941 and chronicles Alice Ann, a sweet sixteen year old who has a huge crush on her brother's friend Mack. There is a five year age difference but that doesn't make Alice Ann shy away from trying to make Mack fall in love with her. Being set in 1941, there is the attack on Pearl Harbor and all available young men enlist, including Mack. They promise to write and actually correspond for three years then the letters stop. Of course, Alice Ann fears that he has been killed in action. Alice Ann so wanted to wear her maiden aunt's wedding dress but now there is "no happily ever after" for her. She is convinced Mack is her one true love and will she become a old maid like her aunt? Alice Ann busies herself with work when Carlton enters the picture. He is her best friends brother that has been wounded in the war. She starts caring for him and as time passes their friendship develops into something more. A simple phone call changes everything. What about Mack, since he was to be her one true love or is Carlton ? This advice was given to Alice Ann. "You can't choose who you fall in love with, but you can choose who you marry". Must read the book to find out Alice Ann's choice.

What I love most about Eva Marie Everson's books is how the story line flows with rich history of that time period. I felt myself back in that era and the emotional toil it had on everyone. The characters were alive, interesting and the story kept me turning pages long into the night. I had to know what Alice Ann decided. You will not be disappointed when you pick this book up to read, you will be picking up all of Eva Marie Everson's books to read, just like I have.

Thanks to Tyndale Publishers for this free book just for my honest opinion.

Alice-Ann's experiences compares to cherished Janette Oke books. Both the WWII time period and the "coming of age" season of life lend the storyline drama and conflict yet the author beautifully layers additionalelements of love, friendship, and faith for an authentic and satisfying adventure of the heart.

Readers will enjoy the peek at life in rural Georgia during WWII while indoor plumbing and telephones were still making their way into farmhouses and folks oftentraveled from town to town by bus and train. The One True Love of Alice-Ann will appeal to readers of all ages. I highly recommend it and will definitely be saving it for my daughters' early teen years.

I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own.

The One True Love of Alice-Ann" by Eva Marie Everson is the new fictional novel. Alice-Ann is a farm girl about to celebrate her sweet 16 when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. Though she has been pining over Mack, her brother's friend, with the war in on she now has a time limit to make her feelings known. Alice-Ann and Mack decide to become pen-pals while he is stationed overseas. Before he can return, her brother's other friend, Carlton, returns from serving. Alice-Ann then forms a bond with Carlton that leaves her struggling when Mack finally returns.

This book is written through the eyes of a teen girl; so it is written as it the author is a teen girl. It is naive and sweet in the beginning. It is a good book to pass the time, not real deep, but a sweet romance. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Tyndale Publishing.

This was a wonderful book. I did not want to put it down. This was a wonderful love story. This is at the beginning of WWll. Many young men were anxious to join the war effort. The young women were left behind. This tells the story of one young woman and two young men. How can she choose. Can any of them learn to trust in God? Can a love be sustained during a war when it hardly has a chance to begin. I received a copy of this book from Tyndale Nlog Network for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

This book was such a beautiful and achingly romantic coming of age story. I enjoyed being transported to 1941 and the years following as our nation was violently thrust into World War II. This story is told from the viewpoint of young 16 year old Alice-Ann and the small town she lived and worked in versus the battlefields of Europe and beyond. As this town was sending off their husbands, sons, brothers, and sweethearts to the war we are given a brief glimpse into what it may have been like for the waiting town the boys left behind. In the midst of a lost innocence for a nation, young Alice-Ann is in love.

I look back and think that if not for the war, this time period seemed much simpler than ours does now. Women were content to marry and have babies, and the men were content to court properly and provide the best they could. Within this backdrop Alice-Ann writes letters to Mack and dreams about the day when he returns home and will look at her as a woman. However, there was the war and nothing in life is certain. When Alice-Ann's best friend's brother, Carlton, returns from the war wounded, Alice-Ann steps in at first to be a friend, but in doing so gives him the will to get better. Carlton is such a great guy, that you cannott help not rooting for him. I do not want to say anymore, but if I make a list of top ten books for this year, this one will be near the top if not number one. Definitely a story that will stick with me and I will reread many times.

I received a copy of this book for free from the publishers. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.
