Jonathan BeckerBlue Springs, MOAge: 18-24Gender: Male4 Stars Out Of 5A Fantastic (Yet brief) Overview of the OTJune 21, 2013Jonathan BeckerBlue Springs, MOAge: 18-24Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5This small volume is magnificent as an introductory guide to the Old Testament.
-It provides relevant background material without being too overbearing.
-Each of the OT books receives relevant treatment (whether specifically or in a group).
-The authors are respectful of faith traditions even where their conclusions may be uncomfortable for a person of faith (myself included).
-Few authors are actually engaged in the text. The giants like Gunkel and Noth are mentioned, but many other capable scholars are left unmentioned.
-There are no good citations. One cannot check the sources that the authors used. One may only look at the "Further Reading" suggestions.
Aside from those small quibbles, I completely recommend this book for the informed student of the Old Testament. (Not necessarily the best choice for a beginning reader, however).
Dan BClarence, NYAge: 55-65Gender: male1 Stars Out Of 5Takes a low view of the BibleOctober 26, 2012Dan BClarence, NYAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1This is a good book for readers who don't believe the Bible is the Word of God unless it is verified by science and archaeological findings. The writers take a very low view of Scripture, treating it like just another ancient resource to be compared with all the others.
