christiangirl4evr3 Stars Out Of 5The NewsmakersDecember 8, 2016christiangirl4evrQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 1I have been a fan of Lis Wiehl to the point that I would buy her books without looking at what they were about. I won't be doing that anymore. While this book has a good story line, moves fast, and is written pretty well, it is a HUGE disappointment. This is not a Christian book. I can count on one hand the amount of times God and faith were mentioned. Jesus is not a theme throughout any part of this story. There was plenty of cussing in the book and all the innuendos of the main character wanting to sleep with her boyfriend made much of the book just completely unenjoyable. I will be looking very carefully at her books from here on out before I purchase them.
RachelGender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5Not A Christian Book!!!July 8, 2016RachelGender: FemaleQuality: 3Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1Lets see. Where do I start? I guess I will go ahead and start with the positives. The writing is good. The plot line was interesting enough. The main character was interesting enough, but some of the supporting characters left a lot to be desired. The idea of second chances and doing what's right was a great thought in this book but it left out the most important part to second chances and that is Jesus. This book was published by a supposed Christian company, but the bad language and questionable subject matter really turned me off. It was not something I would deem Christian. I would really like for them to separate their non-Christian from their Christian. All that being said the story is one you will probably keep reading (if you don't mind bad language.) But it wasn't so great that I would recommend it to anyone.
I received this book from the publisher and the Fiction Guild in exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required.
Deana4 Stars Out Of 5great action packed bookMay 24, 2016DeanaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5At the beginning of the book, I was having a difficult time getting into the story. As the details started to emerge I found myself intrigued and was able to get involved in a heartstopping action filled book.
Erica has been through a very difficult divorce and lost custody of her child. Her alcohol addiction cost her dearly and now she is trying to start over. She lands a job at the prestigious Global News Network. She is determined to be the best reporter they have ever had. As Erica reports on a major disaster it seems that overnight her popularity has skyrocketed. Will fame cost her more than she is willing to deliver? What happens when she investigates the disaster on her own? Why are there so many horrible things happening around her?
The story is written with a great look into the news business and how cutthroat it can be. The more Erica gets great stories that become major headlines, the more her life is in danger. Is her boss, Nylan behind a sinister plot to take out major influential people? Who can Erica trust as she gets closer to the truth? There is mention in the book of alcoholism and drug abuse which draws attention to the destruction it can cause to a person.
The book really picks up speed at the halfway mark and delves into deception, and a story that is believable with twists and turns. I liked the characters and how each one played an intricate part in the story. The author does a good job of making Nylan so evil that I instantly didn't trust him. I am looking forwarding to the next installment of this story to see if Erica can continue to be strong and fight for truth and justice.
I received a copy of this boom from The Fiction Guild for an honest review.
ShaiNorfolk, NEAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5A bit disappointingMay 20, 2016ShaiNorfolk, NEAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3I am a huge fan of Lis Wiehl and have read her books with an eager anticipation and appetite. When The Newsmakers was released, I was all over it. Once again, Ms. Wiehl offers a strong story of suspenseful proportions. I loved the transformation of the main character, Erica Sparks, and the irony in the way she seeks the truth while desperately hoping to hide her own past sins. The villain is wickedly wicked and well written. I truly hated him.
Normally, I would only give rave reviews since I love Lis Wiehls books but there were a few things that brought the book down for me. One was the use of inappropriate language. I would not consider myself a prude by any means, but I was disappointed that the book used any foul language. It didnt add to the dialogue or the storyline and in fact, became a distraction. Another issue was the fact that its written in third person present tense. It was a constant annoyance for me.
The storyline was excellent and I loved the tension and the suspense but it was done in a very telling not showing way and made it seem more like a newer writer than the seasoned and skilled writer that Lis Wiehl already is.
Overall, The Newsmakers is a good book and even with the downsides, I will continue to read her books.
I received this book from the Fiction Guild and Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion which Ive provided here.

This is the high quality story that needs to be made into a movie. This one has it all: politics, media, power, terrorism, conspiracy, and murder. Erica Sparks is a fascinating character. She has all her own faults but is trying to heal from some of her past mistakes. She really is a reporter and she begins to investigate some of the events that have been occurring when she has been around. This puts her life in danger. The other characters, from her family and those at work, are exceptionally well written and they will get you involved with them as you read along. The Newsmakers is an excellent mystery filled with great plot twists, suspense and thrills. This is an exciting book, extremely well paced and suspenseful. This is a great way to begin the series and I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.
