This is THE BEST one source volume on the subject matter currently available. It is heads and shoulders above many other New Testament intro's in too many ways to count.
The great thing about this book is that it is not polemical one way or the other. No special pleading for anything. It is just a straightforward tour de force in the methods of ancient historiography and then what it looks like when applied to the study of the ancient Christian writings we call the New Testament, and a few other "non canonical" early Christian writings as well.
This book really showS not only the what, but also the how, of ancient historical methods in the study of the New Testament, the same methods that are used for any other ancient literary corpus.
Issues of historicity, literary genre, dating, conceptual meanings are all there. Should be required reading for anyone of interested in the subject whatever their "faith" stance. If only more "biblical" studies were done like this one............
