Product Description

The sound of the immersionist's voice heard everywhere. Very few voices are raised in opposition. Obviously, some immersionists speak overmuch on the subject; but just as truly, most of those who disagree with them say far too little. Who knows whether the times are not now ripe for a fresh study? The words "one Lord, one faith, one baptism" (Eph 4:5) clearly indicate there is only one baptism. As a consequence, the meaning is single and the mode is single.

Jay E. Adams' book is a classic exposition of the purpose and means that comprise biblical baptism. Although brief, it ably brings the light of Scripture and reason to a topic too often plagued by shadows of tradition and emotion. The author's skillfull treatment of 1) the meaning of the ancient words for "baptism" and 2) the proper, contextual exegesis of the "buried with him" passages in Romans 6 and Colossians 2 are alone worth the price of this helpful, straightforward read. Adams pastorally but strongly argues the position that biblical baptism, in the Old and New Testaments alike, visibly represents the spiritual cleansing that the invisible Holy Spirit must do to make a person fit for a right relationship with a holy God: descending as it were upon the sinner, the Spirit sets him apart from tainted flesh and unites him to a spotless Christ, thus consecrating him into Christ's body. Adams shows that the mode of this visible washing is consistently prescribed and described in Scripture as the sprinkling or pouring of water over and onto its subjects.
