Publisher's Description

New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece.

A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want—money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist—an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship—and both their lives—forever.

Editorial Reviews

Bestseller Rivers (Redeeming Love) brings unexpected faith to a fictionalized Banksy character in this ambitious novel. Roman Velasco is an artist who has his own studio, rising prestige, and large commissions—yet he keeps secret his life as the Bird, a renowned and elusive graffiti artist. Roman has searched for meaning in women, drink, and art but finds himself empty and angry. Enter Grace Moore, an emotionally wounded single mother who finds her meaning in God. She signs on as Roman’s personal assistant, eager for the job but not so sure about the temperamental artist. Rivers pits the brokenness of these two—Roman’s abandonment and trust issues and Grace’s guilt and pain—against each other and the power of Jesus. Although Rivers too often uses phrases such as “he muttered a four-letter word” in place of cruder words, and frequently reverts to what feels like Christian jargon (“Two people saved by grace. That makes you my brother in Christ.”), the tale will have her long-standing fans hooked. And the fully formed Roman will likely garner her new ones.
4.5 stars, Romantic Times Top Pick

The long wait between Francine Rivers’ novels is well worth it when the final page of this book is turned. Richly detailed characters with traumatic pasts are woven together with Biblical truths and redemptive themes. On the surface, this seems like a very basic romance, but when the layers are peeled back, each of the characters’ choices in the past and present are thoughtfully explored. As Roman and Grace learn about each other, the reader, too, learns about them as glimpses into their lives are revealed carefully as they relate to current experiences. This is an amazing, beautifully written tale to be savored and pondered and shared with others.
Best-selling Rivers (Bridge to Haven, 2014) presents a lengthy, emotionally uninhibited tale of childhood trauma and its affects in adulthood. She handles the difficult topics of addiction, emotional abuse, gang activity, and murder-suicide, all connected to children, with unapologetic directness. Her writing is grounded in conservative Christian values and touches on deeper points of theology and the afterlife. Readers will marvel at Rivers’ storytelling arc encompassing the reconciliation of gritty past misdeeds with the work in progress of a life of forgiveness.
A highly sought-after artist by day and clandestine graffiti prankster by night, Roman Velasco has shut his heart—until Grace Moore shows up on his doorstep. Grace has overcome too much in her life: she has survived her parents’ violent deaths; she has given up her own studies to support her husband through college only to find him cheating on her in their own house; and she has transcended the shock of an unplanned pregnancy. Through it all, Jesus has stood by her, even appearing as an angel to comfort her when she was a grieving 7-year-old trying to find a way to endure. Recently, she has found a home for herself and her 5-month-old son, Samuel, but living with the Garcias, who had hoped to adopt Samuel, is difficult, especially since Selah consistently pushes Grace away, casting herself as the boy’s constant maternal presence. So when Grace accepts a job as the temperamental Roman’s personal assistant, complete with a cottage to herself —a cottage where she can start to separate from Selah and her family, where she can build a life for herself and Samuel —it’s a dream come true. Roman’s rough language and atheism, however, trouble Grace, just as Grace’s spirituality and privacy trouble Roman. After all, he’s used to easy women and commitment-free interludes. Christian novelist Rivers (Earth Psalms, 2016, etc.) deftly threads Roman’s and Grace’s lives together as they tiptoe around their emotional scars, eventually shifting into a dance of tentative steps toward a love neither can resist. Fans of Christian romance will delight in this tale of salvation through love.
Famous artist Roman Velasco battles his demons in the night as The Bird, a graffiti artist. This alter ego draws from Roman’s past before fame and fortune made him wealthy but empty inside. Grace Moore is a suddenly single mother who needs to work. After her husband’s betrayal, she finds comfort in her faith. When an opportunity comes her way to be the personal assistant to the reclusive Roman, Grace is cautious but hopeful that the opportunity will give her some much-needed security. Little does either of them know how much they need each other. VERDICT Rivers (Earth Psalms) is known for creating memorable characters whose brokenness serves as a pathway to redemption and finding faith in Jesus. This character-driven romance will enthrall her many fans.

If you have ever read a story by author Francine Rivers, you already know what kind of story to expect. This is a gritty, true to life story of two hurting individuals who have both gone through traumatizing and damaging childhoods. Neither Roman nor Grace has especially made the right decisions in their adult lives either. The difference between them is that Grace is a believer in Christ and Roman is not.

I enjoyed the contrast of their walks through life, the decisions that they made both in the ups and downs. Both are afraid to get hurt and pursue a love that could change them. The conversations they had about Grace's faith and why she believed were not preachy and showed how for believers, faith is the reason that makes our lives understandable and bearable. That no matter what befalls us, we have a heavenly Father who cares for us and will pick us up time and again.

Grace's Christian friends are people that she can rely on and goes to, to help her walk through life. I liked how the author showed that they were just ordinary people trying to follow the Way themselves, and not one of them was perfect.

This story took many turns that I was not expecting and as the author fit the puzzle pieces together I was awed at where the story was going. This is a 500 page book. I read it in less than two days. I was glued to it and often thought about it when not reading. My favorite book by her is Redeeming Love, this one has now tied with it. If you're looking for a strong redemption story with imperfect people and an adult romance, this is a read for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions stated are my own.

Francine Rivers newest release Masterpiece is truly a MASTERPIECE!!!!. I will admit that I am a huge fan of Francine Rivers and have read everything she has written. Needless to say, I could not wait till this book came out. Cleared my calendar, along with the freezing weather outside, it was a perfect novel to curl up with. I tried to pace myself reading, but it was too hard. The storyline of Roman Velasco and Grace Moore pulls you in more and more with each page, making it a page turner till the very end.

The ghosts of his past hold him captive. Her missteps bring her to his door.

Lets start with Roman..a man that has women, money, fame and is truly unhappy. He is always looking for that next high. He is a sought after artist and his paintings bring in more money than he needs. So to find that high he reverts to his past as a graffiti artist and goes out at night to tag buildings as the "Bird". This alter ego could destroy his career and land him in prison, but he doesn't care. His life is a mess and needs a personal assistant to help him and Grace Moore enters the picture. Grace needs the money so she takes the job, but finds Roman has demons from his past that threaten their working environment. Grace has demons of her own..a failed marriage, an unhappy childhood mixed with tragedy, and a son to raise with little support. She needs the job so desperately that when Roman suggest she live in the guest cottage , she accepts but wonders how this will affect their working relationship. Grace is a believer and Roman is not. When Grace asks Roman what he believes, he says,"We're born. We survive the best we can. We die. End of story" As you continue reading, you realize that if Roman can't let go of his past, he will never reach his full potential, and Grace knows the same applies to her. Throughout the story there are highs, lows but always showing the Lord at work in each of their lives. God had been drawing Roman and Grace to Him from the time they were children, both desperately in need and longing for a father. Long before they knew Him, He'd been at work in their lives. The Lord had promised those who believe that He would take away the stony, stubborn heart;give them a tender, responsive heart; and put His Spirit in them so they could follow Him.

When you pick up one of Francine Rivers books, you will always have the gospel presented in various ways and this book was a fascinating story of how God is always after His children and how His love and mercy cover us, even when we are like Roman Velasco was. If you read just one book this year, please make it this one!. Loved, loved, loved the story and the amazing characters that Francine put together to weave and unforgettable story.

Thanks to Tyndale Publishers for this free book just for my honest opinion.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover. You can however, often judge a book by its description. Ever since I read about this book, I have been eagerly looking forward to reading it. Francine Rivers is a great author who does not put books out as fast as other authors, and she never disappoints when she does come out with a new book.

And what a book it is. The title is a very appropriate title for it: The Masterpiece, for it is indeed a masterpiece of writing. The book is long, coming in at 496 pages, and every page is worth reading. Rivers created two very hurt and flawed characters and spun a masterpiece of a story around them. That many pages leaves a lot of time and space for character development, and Rivers did just that. She goes back in time often into both of the two main characters' pasts to show what made them what they are when the book begins.....and they are great characters.

Roman is not a very nice guy for much of the book, but you can't help but like him and cheer him on. Grace is the ideal Christian woman with a not so ideal past. You pretty much figure these very opposite people are going to end up together by the end of the book, but it is quite an amazing journey watching it happen.

Roman is a well known painter, part of the reason for the title of the book. However, the title captures much more than that as Rivers takes the readers on his journey from a man who hates and does not believe in God, a womanizer who uses women for sex and tosses them aside, to a faithful man of God and a husband who honors his wife and his children.

This was truly an amazing read. I started it on my lunch break yesterday, read more on my second break, read it on my breaks at work today, and finished it at home this evening. I was not only entertained, but was inspired and moved by this fictional account that shows how God can change lives even of those who seem the most hopeless. Five out of five stars, hands down. A masterpiece indeed.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Wow. What can I say? This book is a masterpiece.

I honestly, havent read very many books by Francine, but I have read a few. So when I saw this one my jaw dropped. I could review Francines newest book? Uh, yes please.

Francines writing is real, even raw at times. When we are in the point of view of a non-believer she writes how a non-believer would think and it isnt very nice, but it is very real. Roman is a tough one. He isnt even very likable at first but as we start to see his brokenness things become much more clear.

Grace is a sweetie, but with a broken past of her own. We are let in on some of that early on but other parts are slowly revealed.

Even though this book is (very) long it is never boring. I couldnt wait to get back to it and see what would happen next. Francine Rivers fans will be overjoyed with this newest release and if you havent read anything by Francine why wait any longer?

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
