Author Bio

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the most well-known and beloved theologians of the twentieth century. Renowned for his classic works Life Together and The Cost of Discipleship, Bonhoeffers legacy took on another dimension when he was imprisoned and executed for participating in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Editorial Reviews

"These Advent and Christmas reflections of Bonhoeffer flew from his prison cell, flung open the doors of hope, and sailed heavenward as heart-wrenching prayers, prayers from a condemned man, prayers from a hopeful man, prayers from a man who embodied what it means to pray 'May your kingdom come.' This will be my Advent and Christmas book." Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University, and author of The Jesus Creed and The Blue Parakeet

This is an Advent study that can be repeated each year, or perhaps better to return to every two or three years and see what growth has increased personal understanding of his message. I got the hardback version for that reason (I tend not to be as hard on them as I am on paperbacks). I never cease to be amazed at how much depth such a young man, albeit one living in an extremely difficult moment in history, was able to achieve and communicate.

Bonhoeffer's deep and reverent reflections on Christ and on a life of faithful discipleship are sure to enhance and deepen your own observance of Advent. Each day's meditation contains a longer reflection from Bonhoeffer, a shorter excerpt (many from his correspondence), and a scripture passage. A wonderful addition to your Advent devotional practice.

I have always appreciated the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer which is the reason I was interested in purchasing this collection. I received the book prior to the advent season but have already read several entries. I like the layout and the fact that there are devotions through Epiphany. I am sure that I will cherish this book each advent season.
