Publisher's Description

"Rubart will leave readers inspired . . ." —Publishers Weekly STARRED review for The Long Journey to Jake Palmer

What if You Woke up One Morning and the Darkest Parts of Yourself Were Gone?

Toren Daniels vanished eight months back, and his wife and kids have moved on—with more than a little relief. Toren was a good man but carried a raging temper that often exploded without warning. So when he shows up on their doorstep out of the blue, they’re shocked to see him alive. But more shocked to see he’s changed. Radically.

His anger is gone. He’s oddly patient. Kind. Fun. The man he always wanted to be. Toren has no clue where he’s been but knows he’s been utterly transformed. He focuses on three things: Finding out where he’s been. Finding out how it happened. And winning back his family.

But then shards of his old self start to rise from deep inside—like the man kicked out of the NFL for his fury—and Toren must face the supreme battle of his life.

In this fresh take on the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, James L. Rubart explores the war between the good and evil within each of us—and one man’s only chance to overcome the greatest divide of the soul.

Editorial Reviews

'Rubart weaves an intriguing plot that involves faith and fear, mystery, and redemption.'
'The unpeeling of the layers of Toren's life and its relation to the reader's life is what makes this book so captivating and elevates it above others. The unique perspectives and fantasy situations give stunning realizations about life and spiritual truth. This is a novel that begs to be read more than once and discussed with others to get the full impact of its meaning.'

What a deeply spiritual and moving book.

There are so many underlying meanings going on. I was probably looking too much but I couldn't help myself.

I wondered how this relationship could ever be restored, Sloane seemed so unwilling to move. Yet, I appreciated her prayer life and how she relied on God.

I felt a lot of sympathy for Toren and wanted him to get his family back. But James kept the reader wondering and guessing if that would happen.

And then the whole mystery of what happened to Toren in the first place, where was he all those months and what happened to him?

If you are looking for something a bit different but that will move you I highly recommend this book.

** "For the moment we are going to worry about the moment. And this moment is about trusting, pressing into what we know is true. We are loved beyond measure by a God who is infinite, who numbers the hairs on our heads." **

Author James L. Rubart has brought us an incredible modern day retelling of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with "The Man He Never Was."

Toren Daniels, an ex-NFL player with a major anger issue, wakes up one morning in a strange hotel without the realization that he has also been missing for eight months. He has no idea where he has been all that time, or how he has gotten to where he is. The one thing he does realize, though? The fact that he no longer seems to be the same man he was -- he no longer gives in to his rage.

But his wife Sloan and children Callie and Colton, who believed Toren was dead, aren't so quick to believe in his transformation. And when he begins to once again give into his dark urges, Toren finds it harder and harder to find reconciliation with himself, his family and his past.

As he undergoes his journey to truly tame "the beast" within him, Toren meets some interesting and mysterious characters -- private investigator Eden Lee, who just may be more than she seems; Clavin Sorkin, the director at The Center where Toren sought help; and Alena, an intriguing storekeeper. Will these people be able to find the answers he seeks, and help him once and for all slay the beast within?

Toren undergoes a Jekyll/Hyde journey, as he must learn to overcome the Hyde-like urges within him and try to reclaim his life -- the good parts of his life -- once again.

"The Man He Never Was" is an allegorical piece that takes on the battle between good and evil, light and darkness. Heavily rooted in Scripture, it reminds us that God loves us beyond measure; we must learn to trust and press into what we know is true; overcoming the loss of hope; love is the greatest weapon we have and that it casts out all fear; the importance of grace and forgiveness; and that nothing can separate us from Christ.

Rubart also does an incredible job in reminding us of who God is: ruler of angel armies, and yet our Daddy; a rock and a lamb; and an eagle and a shield. In essence, He is everywhere and we cannot escape His presence or His protection.

Fans of allegorical pieces, like "Hinds' Feet on High Places" and works like William Paul Young's "The Shack" will enjoy "The Man He Never Was."

    Four stars out of five.

I went into this book thinking I wouldnt like it but found out I couldnt put it down. I devoured this book for the truths that are between the pages. If you find you cant forgive yourself, feel unlovable, or need to learn to love yourself then you will find yourself loving this novel. We all have that darkness inside that we need to conquer by feeding our spiritual side with Gods truth. I loved everything from the writing style to the characters. It is a book of forgiveness, mercy, grace, love, and finding yourself. Putting the past of childhood abuse behind and looking forward to Gods plan for your life. I will put this on my favorites shelf to read again, as a reminder of how much God Loves me. Definitely a must read. I could gush over this book. :) as it resonates within my soul.

I received a complimentary copy from Thomas Nelson & Zondervan Fiction Guild. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Interesting modern retelling of Jekyll & Hyde

The Man He Never Was is a modern retelling of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but it is also a compelling story that stands on it's own as a work of contemporary fiction. It is the story of a man who was willing to go to any lengths to conquer his anger issues, only to find that eight months have passed when he wakes up in a strange hotel room. As he seeks to reunite with his family, he learns that they have quite happily moved on with their lives. His reappearance leaves them shocked, shaken, and his children warily suppressing their more positive feelings.

This is a novel with characters that are relatable and a story that is full of heart and hope. The mystery of where Toren Daniels had been for eight months, and his dogged pursuit of answers add a great deal of interest to what is otherwise a family drama. And the answers are somewhat unexpected even though some of the twists are a bit telegraphed. But this enhances rather than detracts from the story.

The minute I read the description of The Man He Never Was, I was intrigued in spite of myself. I've never enjoyed Jekyll and Hyde characters or storylines (not even in the form of a certain rascally cartoon rabbit, possibly my first exposure to them), and here was a modern retelling by an author whose novels hadn't previously appealed to me.

While this was definitely the best version of Jekyll and Hyde that I've experienced, it was let down in small ways by a few minor things. There were occasions where it felt like there was a brief dumping of information, and the occasional word choice that pulled this reader out of the story to wonder how one drills with their eyes or stares "for an age."

If you enjoy a modern take on a classic, a redemption story, and a bit of faith meets magical realism, then this just might tick all the boxes for you. It is an arresting take in many ways, and there are moments that will stay with the reader after the book is closed.

This review refers to a finished copy I voluntarily received from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! The first book I tried to read by this author turned me off rather quickly, but this one was completely the opposite. (I have read one other of his in the meantime that was pretty good.) It is a bit of a spin-off of Jekyll and Hyde. However, in the end, it is about God's love. It had me cheering for the main character, Toren Daniels! As usual, in a James Rubart book, there are unexpected twists and turns. This book takes you on a sort of long journey, but it is worth it in the end. Really, it has something that all of us need to hear, in one way or another/to one degree or another. I recommend it!
