Product Description

The Lost Bible provides a fascinating introduction to sacred writings of great profundity and aesthetic merit that did not become part of the canons of the Jewish and Christian Bibles. The reader is introduced to a wide selection of these extraordinary and beautiful lost works from words considered to be those of prophets, kings, and patriarchs (even Adam himself) to legends and stories that supply missing parts of the Gospel. For each work, a commentary is followed by a translated extract in clear and up-to-date language.

This is one of those books which probably should not have been written. It purports to offer the reader an introduction to those works of the Old and New Testaments which were excluded from the canon. The problems are manifold. First among these is that there is no rigorous standard for selection of the offerings. It seems to be solely the author's choice, with no evident logic. Likewise, the selection of sample texts from non-canonical works offers very little insight into either issues of style, or philosophical/theological bias. The reader gets a bit of information from the partial summaries of the works excerpted, and a bit more from the data boxes which provide possible composition dates and textual provenance. So much more could have been done, however. The author, who writes fairly clearly, should have concentrated on work lists and groupings, with summaries for the texts listed, and the basis for their groupings. A comprehensive survey of both Old and New Testament non-canonical writings would have been far more helpful than this book presents. The illustrations are largely a distraction. Their only utility is to suggest that some of the legendary material in the non-canonical writings inspired artists and writers long past the dates when the works themselves were excluded from the canon and supposedly "lost". On the whole, a very disappointing effort.
