A compelling autobiographical testament to the spiritual pilgrimage of a woman who, in her own words, dedicated herself "to bring[ing] about the kind of society where it is easier to be good.''

Author Bio

"Dorothy Day, is a modern Catholic saint in the tradition of St. Francis. Her book is an absorbingly well-written series of pictures of her work and that of those she has gathered around her connection with the Catholic Worker, its hospitality house and its community farm. I rejoice with the new hope for mankind because of the kind of work that she and her associates are doing."- Norman Thomas

Editorial Reviews

“Fascinating as personal history, important as a document in twentieth-century American social history.”
“Dorothy Day wanted to be good, and not just do good. . . . a fascinating memoir.”

This review was written for The Long Loneliness: An Autobiography.
I knew very little about Dorothy Day before reading "The Long Loneliness" and what amount I knew, I found fascinating. I figured that her autobiography would be a good place to start to learn more and I was not let down. While this was written twenty years before her death, one learns so much about her life - about her childhood, her radical views on theology, life, politics etc as well as her daughter and Peter Maurin. While I don't agree with everything Dorothy Day did or supported, I still find her a captivating figure and one to look up to. For anyone interested in 20th century Catholicism, history, politics or wanting to just learn more about the infamous Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement, this book is for you.
