Kids love flashy lights! With the "LED Warning Beacon Kit" they'll create a flashy display of 10, large, Watt LEDs that sequences in a circular pattern. It can be used to indicate an alarm or warning condition or for celebrating a success or birthday, drawing attention to your special location, or just for fun!
This is a complex project consisting of five functional sub-modules. It does not use a microcomputer chip, but demonstrates the use of several ICs to directly control the timing of the 10 high-power LEDs. One of its key design elements is the use of single transistors to provide linear current regulators to drive the LEDs without destroying them. During initial assembly, the LED power and brightness is set to a low level to make initial testing easier. Once the circuit is proven to be working properly, power and brightness can be increased by changing the current sense resistor.
The "Additional Options" section shows how each LED can be replaced by several LEDs in series to increase the display size, and the simple math needed to determine a new power supply voltage to achieve this. These LEDs can be "wired" to the printed circuit board so they can create a different shape display, like arranging them around the brim of a hat to make a wearable display.
Tools Needed (that are NOT included): Safety glasses, Soldering Iron with Cage-Type Soldering Iron Stand, Solder wire (Preferably Tin/Lead alloy 63/37 with a rosin core flux) Long or Needle Nose Pliers, Fine Wire Cutters, a basic Digital Multimeter (DMM), and four AA batteries.
Parts Included: The kit includes a round printed circuit board, all components, 10 Large = watt LEDs, detailed operational theory, assembly instructions with parts placement guide and schematic, basic trouble-shooting guide, and 4-AA Battery Holder with switch. (Batteries are not included).
This kit requires soldering skills. Recommended Ages: 10 and up.
If you do not already have tools, you may want to consider the Quality Tool Set available for purchase separately.
