Product Description

A consumable workbook for Grades 4-8. English in the Kim Marshall series is divided into Part A and Part B and includes a total of thirty-six units. Both workbooks are designed to improve your knowledge in English grammar, writing skills, and word analysis. Teacher's Manual is sold separately, #3791722. If you work carefully through each unit, you should become a better writer and reader, and also you should know many of the words that teachers and writers use to talk about our language. Part A covers the following areas: 1.) writing skills, sentences, paragraphs, and letters (units 1 to 7), and 2.) usage, capitals and punctuation (units 8 to 16). Each unit introduces one skill. The first four pages of the unit teach the new material, and the fifth page is a test to see how much you have learned. Part B sold separately see #3791721.

I have written a more complete review below (for part B), but basically this book is similar as far as the pros and cons. This is an excellent grammar book. The exercises are easy to understand and theyre comprehensive. Part A covers subject and predicate, sentence fragments, slang and standard English, double negatives, run-on sentences, paragraphs, letters, proper and common nouns, using capital, four kinds of sentences, quotation marks, apostrophes to show possession, apostrophes in contractions, using commas, and using colons and semicolons. There is plenty of practice on each topic, but unfortunately the book does contain some comments some families might find offensive, such as She converted to the black muslim religion when she was twenty-three. (Its a capitalization exercise so some words are not capitalized where they should be.) I did not find any old earth type comments and I looked thoroughly through every page, but its possible I missed some. Its such a good book, though, for grammar exercises, I would consider just marking through any objectionable sentences.Sonya Haskins, author of Homeschooling for the Rest of Us (Bethany House, 2010)
